Tank, since you are at 4 notes at 120bpm try to increase to 122bpm and then 124bpm and so on. You will pass your barrier before you know it. Best of luck, and watch out for Muris lurking in shadows in full ninja garb !! He might try to shred all the loose papers on your desk....

I think I single handedly destroyed this thread. not intentionally, but is seems so. actually his question was a good one.

i will try to bring it back from the depths of wherever it went.

the original question was...

"I presume these aren't at the limit of comfortable play for Muris. I'm just wondering if anyone else finds similar limits in their playing (instructors included!), and where those limits are."

I will say 170bpm, pretty comfortable there, at the present, 16th notes. I keep working on Canon Rock, and that is 200bpm. And I work at 200bpm, but not comfortable there yet. Maybe in a month.

That's pretty fast from my perspective at least for alt-picking - what sort of patterns are you working on at that speed? Pentatonic? 3nps? Sweeps maybe?

Canon Rock. I have taken the position that learning to play that song well, well after that, other things will come pretty quickly. I will put it up on youtube in maybe a month AFTER i consider it reasonably perfect. If it takes 3 months, I will wait. No more uploading crap looking for abuse to motivate me.

Regarding the sweeps, I was going to qualify that. I do them with a heavy reliance on right hand muting. Very different approach than is taught here. I like the neoclassical approach, but I am going to back into that. I did not want to wait 3 years to get up to speed on sweeps. I like the sound of my sweeps, but they are not like the teachers here.

Regarding AP, there are only a few spots where you have the 16th note runs, and those are the final spots really to perfect. To get the accents precise. That is the big thing. This does not mean I can do this everywhere, just Canon Rock. As I said, I am taking the approach of perfecting something, and then moving from there, rather than half ass'ing a whole bunch of stuff. Although I have 17 lessons I work on.

Ok to help bring the thread back on track as fkalich so rightly pointed out that I'd drifted off point:

Tank, I think Understudy's suggestion is a good one. I find that raising the metronome by 5 bpm for 16ths at whatever speed I'm currently comfortable with will often throw me. Going up in smaller intervals sometimes shows me more clearly where my progress bar actually is. Most recent I went up 4 bpm but couldn't manage 5. Might sound weird but in my case very true.

Another possible thing to put your picking under the 'microscope' - if you can video it and watch what your doing - just to see if there's is some thing that you're doing that needs work to iron out.

Cheers,
Tony
