I've seen a couple of guitarists who can go from picking to fingerstyle and back, and I don't see how they're holding onto the pick while doing this. Most notably is John Mayer, he does this a lot, although I can't get a good shot on where it goes, curled under a finger? Or between two fingers??

Any ideas...

When i have to play stuff like that, i use a thumb pick, so it just sticks to your thumb, but when i dont have one available, i just use my 3 fingers (Pinky, Ring and Index) for picking.
