Thinking About Our Next Collab

So I cannot quite make up my mind about what we should do next.

Maybe something metal? We haven't done that in a while. For example I have been listening to Tool a lot recently and would love to try something similar.

Another jam: Jamming is so much fun and I just can't get enough of it. And our previous collab (Latin Jam) turned out insanely cool!

Maybe something more instructional by nature. Ie we could do something where we construct solos bit for bit (or lick for lick) together (with a lot of constructive community feedback) and just try to make it as cool as possible.

Maybe try exploring a new genre?

Another idea which we haven't done for a very long time, would be an acoustic collab or jam. This could also work very well with some occasional soft vocals.

What do you think? Do you have any backing suggestion? Or maybe even some material ideas of your own?

How about some southern style rock, I haven't got a clue how to get that Worthen sound but it will be a learning experience, could be a song, a jam, a call and response with you, anything really.

Gab shared this video at my thread to do with my current lessons etc.

Wow what a cool video, I absolutely love that modern vintage sound 🤩

My experience from this style is very limited though

Here are a few ideas. I'll expand a bit later as I'm pressed for time:

Instructional:
[1] - Melodic Interpretation
[2]- Motif + solo
1:Sort of lacking a better word here, but each student could be given a motif, small theme and so on that ties together as a whole between everyone and we have to work from that theme, interpret it, add our own twist, spice, feel and so on. I think this could create even more of a song-like sound.

2:We all have a motif that we stick to at the end of our solo - could be a 32 bar backing - or 16+16, 24+8, you name it, and we all must come back to that motif at the end, with our own interpretation, but we still have x-amount of bars for our own solo. This would also create more of a song-like structure, and we might feel more "joined together" that way - while also giving the collaboration leader something more "connected" to work with in the final product if we want to go for a song-like structure or if we want to see what it sounds like with harmonies and so on. In a way some more structure, but still freedom.

Odd Time Grooves:
3/4, 5/4 or 7/4
Of course this could be expanded upon, but the above are relatively simple. 3/4 probably being the most common one - or somewhat related could be a 9/8 - done similarly to a triplet groove in 3/4.

Blues:
In the style of SRV
In the style of BB King
Slow Blues - in the style of Ivan's "Poor Man Blues" lesson.

I think in general it could be cool to have some sort of "instruction" that still leaves a bit of space, as some of the first ideas I mentioned.

Other things could be Toto style, simple fusion style, 2-5-1 jazz....

(EDIT: Pardon the weird formatting. I'm experimenting a bit laugh.gif @Kris, I don't think the indent-feature and list-feature works. Couldn't get it to work now, but will try again later)

Very cool ideas Cael -

I think that using a common motif will def help us make the collab more song-like.

The downside though is that it will make the collab less accessible for everybody (generally more people tend to join the less rules/barriers there are).

However, we could make the motif optional - and this might give us some takes that will allow for a cool song structure.

Oh and a slow blues is always a really good idea 🤩

It doesn't have to be a complex melody line as a base, but one that can be played around with, added to, interpreted with notes in between the melody, harmonized and so on.

I put something together quickly just now as a demonstration. There are 3 parts:
- Chorus section with a relatively simple melody line.
- Free Solo Part
- Free Middle Section

And a small transition to bring it back. They can kinda be put together in whatever order you like, I think, depending on participants, structure you want and so on.

It ended up being more of a "Lonesome Cowboy Blues". Doesn't have to be used now, but if you want to keep it around for some other time, that's cool too. cool.gif

Everyone else can of course chime in too, give their opinion or idea and so on. I just did this quickly, so there are a few things I think needs to be changed a bit compositionally and so on, but just kinda wanted to throw it out here cool.gif

For anyone without Guitar Pro, here's an mp3-export:

Some very cool ideas so far! i like all of them to be honest. Doing a sort of 70s roots rock thing like in the video could be lots of fun. i hadn't thought about doing something acoustic though that could be fun as well. We have not done a punk thing in a while, but im not sure if that would be to everyones taste.

the motif could be written as part of the backing, maybe use it as a chorus to keep coming back to? People could play over it or harmonize it?

Just adding this here for Kris:

I'm actually tempted to just start this as a seperate student-run collab. It's been a while since we've had two going at the same time! More activity is never a bad, right?

I think I can handle a student-run collab, but only if I'm allowed to do so cool.gif

That is the whole setup, exactly, yes, as described smile.gif A simple motif that you can still work around. It's not a million notes and it leaves room for some interpretation, and yes, I was also thinking a chorus with lyrics along the lines of this:

Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

As the valley howls its weeping song
The sun sets sail to foreign shores
But this is where I belong
This is my home

In the valleys you better sleep with eyes unshut
or the wilds will run you out of luck
But this is where I belong
This is my home

Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

Here's an a quick take on a chorus vocal melody (over the GP7 backing):

WOW I love it Cael!!

This would make up for an excellent collab!!

If you want to run it as your own collab you def have my support.

If you would like me to mix it and add some additional arrangement I am all up for that as well well 🤩

It's up to you - I think it would make a cool "official" collab too and not just student-run. I just didn't want to jump ahead in the queue if other people had some cool ideas too. I think it could be cool to hear your additional arrangement, but if you can give me till tonight (or about 24 hours) I'll just polish it a bit and send you something, as it was done very quickly while waiting for my dinner in the oven last night and there are things I'd like to just give a quick second glance. smile.gif

Definitely - feel free to polish some more on it!

I also think there is still room for others to add their ideas. Generally when we combine ideas from different people is when we get the mojo going 😎

As an instructional thing, something that would be both very cool and very 'instructional' would be to have a collab where GMC teachers participate and then have the same collab with their respective students. Have the teachers work with and guide their students as they're preparing their takes.
Just a thought.

Very cool. I will definitely join. And maybe can help with vocals in the chorus. To harmonize some parts with my voice.

Interesting, this got me thinking.. maybe we could have different teams work with the same track/riffs and then we can compare the versions? Could be a very cool experience!

Interesting brainstorming going on now! I like it smile.gif

I'll keep working on what I'm doing in the background and have it done soon regardless, but is it a bad idea if we continue to brainstorm a bit? smile.gif
