Here in the states, a cop put his knee on a black mans neck to pin him to the ground and the black man couldn't breathe and he died. Ever since, we have been having riots nation wide. The journalists are still wearing their proper PPE masks while covering this. Here is a vid near where I used to live in Atlanta Georgia where people are breaking in to CNN center in the middle of downtown Atlanta. As if we are not having enough problems, now this?

I can understand this response to a failing system where peaceful responses haven't worked there's a lot of anger, feelings of hopelessness etc. Killer Mike said some good things about voting the problems out of the system but there's a large demographic that aren't entitled to vote. Within these protests we've also seen opportunistic white people looting, black protesters protecting lone policemen etc.
Some official's comments just have me gobsmacked and just show how bad the attitudes of some with power and responsibility are.

I'm part of the privileged white in another country, I'm not sure what the correct and effective response should be.

police shooting are down , whites are killed more often.
This is more about a media that wants a race war , a government trying to keep us apart

As a result of Gezi Protests in Turkey a few years ago, though it was an anti-goverment movement the ruling party/presidents votes increased. Reason is as more tear gas, violence increases the neutral and/or non-activists start to support the goverment wanting protests to end.

This is why specially the president will not give peace messages. As US failed with the battle with covid, he will use this opportunity.

I read today that the training to be a policeman in the US is 21 weeks classroom training and 13 weeks field training.

That's less than 9 months.

It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
In Los Angeles for example (LAPD) it's 6 months of classroom training 'if' you do 40 hours a week for 26 weeks. Field training is later and also varies place to place.

Ireland is 2 years and they aren't armed. I'm just wondering if better longer training would help to weed out those not up to the task.

Short answer. Yes.
I know that in L.A. the application process for the LAPD is very tough and many many applicants are turned down.

I wish I knew what the correct policy response could be. Sadly I have no idea. All we can really do on a personal level is just try to be kind to each other. This can take many forms of course, it can be as small as just not being catty on social media which is something that I see so much of that Ive worn out the BLOCK function on facebook. I'm hoping some positive things come out of all this tragedy.

Actually, this started because of the blatant killing of a black man named George Floyd by police when one white cop put his knee on the Mr Floyd's neck and kept it there until Mr Floyd asphyxiated.

I do hope we get longer training for police. Also I hope we see fewer choke holds being used and fewer people of color being killed in the street. They could have just cuffed Mr Floyd. Then again, they could have just talked to him later at his home. None of this was actually needed imho. It just seemed to enflame all the existing tensions that were boiling over in various communities. Things slowed down once the national guard got called in. Seeing soldiers on the street is a never a good thing imho.
