Hey everybody,

I bought a little Fender tube amp a few months ago but I'm now very interested in purchasing a second amp, probably a Mesa Boogie. I really love the tone that I have heard from a few really good players including Petrucci.
I only play at home so I don't think I want/need anything that is 100 watts, and also I probably plan on buying more amps in the future (I don't plan on selling any just collecting smile.gif ), so I guess is it good to buy a bunch of combos or one really good cab and then a bunch of heads?
Tone wise, I would like something that is versatile with nice cleans but more importantly has a good lead channel and good distortion, where I really wouldn't need pedals except maybe a bit of overdrive. I don't play death metal but I definitely want enough distortion to be able play pretty much anything.
They seem to have a bunch of combos, some even have the ability to lower wattage which would really nice.
Right now I'm considering the Express 5:50 because of it's size and the ability to use it at 5 watts.
What are your views on the express, lonestar, roadster, stilleto, and there other amps? Or do people prefer ENGL?
I finally found a Mesa dealer near me in Canada and will try out whatever they have in order to get a better idea of which model suits me.
I'm basically looking for Muris' haha.

Don't look at me,
I haven't tried those combos/heads you mentioned above. smile.gif

Mesa is generally very good brand,
with lots of gain on certain models, like RoadKing per example.
Once again it comes to tastes,Mesa,H&K,Krank,Diezel,Engl,Marshal etc.
All good amps with high gain here and there
but you still have to try it by yourself to make final decision.
Same thing about combo or head choice.
Some prefer heads or rack while some like it as combo.

Atm I have 2 racks + cab and I really want to make things
more simple with combo but it doesn't mean anything to you,
perhaps you'll enjoy head+cab a lot! smile.gif

Randall Smith, the founder of Mesa/Boogie is known as the "father of modern high gain": that's because he invented it. He also invented channel switching. Aside from that, Boogie amps are versatile and toneful beasts whose sounds rival the high dollar "boutique" amps costing thousands more.

I've done some research on Boogie amps, including owning a Dual Rectifier, and I can attest to the fact that all Boogie models are inspiring to play through. Andy Timmons plays through the Lonestar and the Stiletto Deuce. Andy is generally known for his toneful playing, and has been complimented on his sound by Eric Johnson a number of times. Folks, you can't ask for a better endorsement than that.

John Petruccis' heavy and clean sounds are coming to us through Lonestars, Road Kings, and Mark IVs. Petruccis' sound oozes tone, both clean and overdriven, to compliment his monster chops.

Carlos Santanas' signature sound from the Abraxas days came through a Mark 1...dig the infinite sustain!

The latest Lonestar has a 10 watt switch to go along with the 50 and 100 watt switches. The 10 watt option puts the amp into class A mode which is a sound that has to be experienced; talk about sweet!

Go to the Mesa/Boogie website and read all the reviews. Pick any model, you can't go wrong.

I agree with FrankW, all of Mesa amps are great, you can't go wrong there. I don't think words can really describe what you want to buy, try to find in a store some Mesa combos, and try them out. Only this way you will be sure if that is the amp you want or not. When you hear the Mesa - you will know if it is the amp for you.

I must add that I tried Rect-O-Verb
and it's surely not higain amp by its default imho. smile.gif
There is lot of gain but not enough
if you're looking for shredy meat sound.
But combined with unit like G-Force per example
you can get much more from this or any other amp,
EQ's,compressor and certain filters will help you
to get more attack and eventually "virtual" gain.

Btw,I played some Marshall combo 2 weeks ago,
not sure of the model tho,
it's 2 channels,solid tube,1x12 speaker.
Now,I'm not fan of Marshall's drive because
of that "fuzz" around your tone.
But I used G-Force in FX Loop and after
just few minutes of tweaking its filters
and cutting everything above 5Khz
this combo somehow sounded like really great amp. biggrin.gif

Boogies are awesome amps, if you want high gain then try the rectifier or roadking models, they rule big time. But as Muris already said, it is all a matter of taste, so it would be the best to go to music stores and try as many heads/combos as you can to build up your own opinion. And as a tip, the best setups are the simple ones, huge setups with tons of different amps and effects can cause a lot of stress, I would rather keep it simple.

thanks for the replies everybody, I'm going go down to the store this week and try some amps out, the ENGL Screamer looks pretty nice as well, as I hear it sounds good at bedroom levels too, I don't know if I'll be able to find in Canada, maybe I can order from Musician Friend
The rectifiers look awesome but I think they will be overkill for home use, i will try the rectifier combo (i think the roadster)
