GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Thoughtful Practice

Thought people might find this interesting as I have heard it said many times, mentally think where your fingers are about to go learning making chords changes before making them. I also thought this might be handy to use in memorising notes/scales/progressions. smile.gif

This is precisely what the best seller 'the inner game of tennis' is all about. It was huge with musicians in the 70s and early 80s. Probably one of the best modern books on the mental game of accomplishing stuff.

There's also The Inner Game of Music, co-written with the author of The Inner Game of Tennis but made to suit musicians better. Great book. http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Game-Music-Barry-Green/dp/0385231261

Also the book Piano Fundamentals talks extensively about a topic called Mental Play, which is visualization practice.

This is very true and I always tell people that the power of anticipation will work wonders on your playing. Visualizing what you have to do before you do it will help you get closer and closer to the desired result.

For instance, when playing the guitar and you have a lot to remember - especially when it comes down to many songs in a playlist. Knowing how to sing that song in your head is always going to help as your playing will only come to complement the singing. You don't have to sing out loud, it can only be done in your head, but it helps smile.gif You know what's coming next in the song and that will always help.

Stillness of mind smile.gif That can also be practiced - when I was at the seaside, I managed to sit on the beach and make silence, but complete silence in my mind for a few tens of seconds. It can be achieved through meditation, if you really want that. The initial idea is to become able to NOT think of anything for 10 seconds. Look around and observe the present, surrounding you - listen to your breath, admire the view on the window. In short, be there, not elsewhere. This is the first step smile.gif I would be glad to talk to you about the subject if it interests you, so let me know, ok?

This is probably the main reason I play music. And especially why I love to play in bands, live. I'm just 'there' - nowhere else.
*And no, I don't think much, if ever when I play. Thinking is for your practice sessions.

I experienced this thing with the mates in the Pantera tribute band tonight at the rehearsal - I was there smiling and enjoying the music and not thinking about what I was playing biggrin.gif and it felt really awesome!

I am the same...I play for meditation purposes.. I don't have to try and silent my mind...I appreciate the moment as it happens..I am nowhere else. The same happens when I am drawing.

I sometimes hit the crunch channel with a bit of reverb and play without any track at all, building some open string themes, being a bit atemporal, just like holding a nice conversation with someone you like a lot smile.gif It feels incredibly good and sometimes, nice ideas stick around due to this sort of meditation - if we can call it like that. Thing is, it empties the mind without any doubt.
