Hey Himansu!

This thread belongs to you now smile.gif

Please let me know about what you would like to learn (if it is only modern metal we can start wink.gif) and a bit about yourself and your musical/ guitar playing goals. Do you have anything recorded yet?

First of all, Thank you so much for mentoring me

Majorly i would love to play in the styles of Lamb of God, Trivium, Machine Head , Devil Driver ....

Would need suggestions from you for more such bands preferably groove metal ones....

Will do a cover of the solo of my favorite song: Walk with me in Hell soon

My Primary aim is:

Ability to make Drop tuned rhythms:
cos i am stuck with respect to new ideas and things have become quite monotonous with pedal tones.
Learning new chords like the ones you have taught in Metal metrics series.

Then after i am good at this

I would love to learn how to make my own solos

I understand that in Modern Metal not every song has a solo
But i am greatly influenced by Mark Morton and his previous solo work in songs like Grace, Walk with me.... , Pathetic, Ghost Walking, Set to fail etc..

Further i also love riffs by Matt heaf/ Corey beaulieu
And not to forget Robb Flynn/ Demmel

Will record soon and put it up

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 25 2012, 08:01 AM

Alright Himansu! Got that all written down:

- modern metal phrasing in riffs and leads - that will be our aim smile.gif

I am waiting to see your material and then, we shall start going through various lessons and dissecting them so that you may understand what makes them tick wink.gif Tell me, how are your theory skills, my friend?

Cosmin

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Jul 25 2012, 06:11 PM

Hello Cosmin

I have finally managed to get audio recording of the solo of Walk with me in hell

It is an attachment in this message.

Please rate it and one small request of being a lil lenient wink.gif wink.gif cos i was kinda nervous as its my first recording

yeah with regards to your questions:

My theory is not very strong as in i do know the scales like pentatonics Major scale and am learning the modes
actually if u give me a scale i can shred it down quickly

but i lack theoritical knowledge and would love to match scales and chords with respect to whats used in metalcore and groove metal

i would be extremely happy if Ben, Todd , Gab too would rate the same recording

And yeah the same request as done to Cosmin, Leniency expected in evaluation wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

Please excuse the audio recording as my video recorder has some problems

Awaiting ur reply Cosmin

Please give me my first lessons cant wait wanna get started nowwww!!!!!!! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Hey Himansu!

First things first - could you record the solo against a metronome or some rhythmic landmark? It seems well played but it's 'in the air' somehow smile.gif

You can bend and vibrate, but still I would like to sense your timing skills biggrin.gif So please record against a metronome or backing track if possible.

Alright, we shall start off with this lesson: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metalcore-I-Trivium-Style/ please take a look and tell me if it's too difficult!

Cosmin

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Jul 28 2012, 06:08 AM

Oh thank you....

will practice this over the weekend and put up a recording of the same

Yes and by the way i am buying a new guitar....

Super excited

Now i can learn some George Lynch whammy stuff too

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 28 2012, 08:00 AM

Hehe! Yes, George is something, ain't he? biggrin.gif

These lessons below, deal with his style smile.gif Please take a look over them and let's go through them in what regards theory - so you can understand what he uses and how he phrases, ok?

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/dragons_tears_in_the_style_of_george_lynch/

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/george-lynch-style-lesson/

They might be too advanced technically, but that doesn't mean we can't analyze and later on when your technique is tip top! If you feel like you can already start learning them, please tell me, ok?

m working on the Metalcore rhythm
should get it in a day or two

Lynch style by Zsolt seems nice and challenging.
will try that too but take time for i....

first things first, will record the trivium style lesson soon
and dis time with backing laugh.gif

Hey man smile.gif Don't be hasty, ok? smile.gif It's important to nail each one as close to perfection as possible and then go for the next smile.gif

I was aiming for the same thing, just that I want the head and cabinet version biggrin.gif

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Aug 10 2012, 04:28 PM

Head and Cabinet version is amazing

though its very expensive

but slightly expensive is the Mesa Boogie Mark 5
LOG guys use it
i guess Morton's got a RA 100 this year

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 12 2012, 07:00 PM

I received an offer for the 6505 head for about 1000 bucks, which is pretty ok I think.

its a beautiful amp

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 15 2012, 08:46 AM

Well, these next 2-3 months I'll be doing a lot of other investments in my studio especially and my own little gym, but if I am able to sell my current amps (Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head and cab and a Marchall AVT 50) I will get the 6505 and a Mesa 2x 12 from eBay.

heyya big brother

got the amp and my new guitar is ready

have finally started practicing after some 10 days
find the amp a lil difficult to master especially the noise its very loud

plus the bridge on my new guitar a schaller vintage tremolo has a low action as compared to tune o matics

and the active pick ups

everything seems sooooo new
will need a day or 2 to getta a hang of things

cos first time m playing active pikups and a tube amplifier

seems like jumping straight into hell

ha ha
m lovin it

i did play and nail the trivium lesson u gave me but dis time m gonna use proper metronomes

do suggest me some cheap pedals dat help me tame this beastly amp

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 17 2012, 08:26 AM

Hey Himansu! Wow man biggrin.gif It sounds really exciting! Dude, I am a 'simple setup' kind of guy biggrin.gif so I will recommend what I think is necessary for you as a guitarist with a tube amp.

Reverb, Delay, Booster, Noise suppressor, Wah and maybe a Whammy and a Phaser. This is what I am using - but tell me, what sort of budget do you have for the pedals?

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Aug 19 2012, 02:56 PM

Budget Bro is low man
not worth mentioning

But i guess i wont need wah wah and definitely not a distortion pedal

need something to smoothen out the sounds and the noises

Then the noisegate should be the first on the list smile.gif and maybe a reverb - does the 6505 have a built in reverb unit?

As for the noisegate - I recommend the ICP Decimator or the MXR Noiseclamp smile.gif

It has reverb

so i guess noise gate

Cosmin Brother one small request

Along with the GMC vid lessons that u tell me to practice,
Please give me some small theoretical / fretboard knowledge work as well

Cos i want to build up my theory
M currently doing some serious deep dive in the Major Scale and the modes
Please also guide me on this aspect
Thanks in advance smile.gif smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 22 2012, 12:30 PM

Hey Himansu smile.gif Well, about theory, we should start with learning things about the major scale smile.gif

What do you know about it so far?

We are going to talk about intervals, chords and arpeggios at first so let me know what you know about these and we'll start from there smile.gif

Cosmin

I am referring to Troy Stetina's theory book
which starts with the same topic related to intervals and the Major Scale

It would help me if you could start from scratch.

I know the Major Scale
but then Intervals arpeggios chord creation is kinda greek and latin for me
so wud love to take it from here itself

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 25 2012, 12:35 PM

Hey there Himansu smile.gif

We will start with this:

1) We have the major scale built up using this formula: w w h w w w h.

w = whole step
h = half step

2) Any natural major scale is built after this formula. Example:

C D E F G A B C

there's a w between C and D
there's a w between D and E
there's a h between E and F
there's a w between F and G
there's a w between G and A
there's a w between A and B
there's a h between B and C

Now, if you look at your guitar, you will notice that if you play the C note (3rd fret D string) the D note is one whole step up, on the same string. That means that the note right next to the C note is C# and the note next to C # is D. So, 2 frets up means one whole step and one fret up means a half step.

3) Now, we have concluded that E is the major third in the case of C major and if we lower the major 3rd with one half step, we get the minor third and automatically, we can create a minor chord - C minor in our case.

Here are the formulas:

1 3 5 - major chord formula. Example: C E G
1 b3 5 - minor chord formula. Example: C Eb G

4) If you know these now biggrin.gif, please tell me how does the G major scale look like - what are the notes making it up. (Use the w w h w w w h formula, starting from G) and tell me the notes making up the G major and G minor chords smile.gif

What do you think?

Cosmin

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Aug 26 2012, 11:29 AM

K lemme try

G Major Scale should be

G A B C D E F# G
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

Based on the above,

Major Chord Formula: 1 3 5: G B D
Minor Chord Formula: 1 3b 5: G A#/Bb D

Is that correct Cosmin Master???

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 26 2012, 11:42 AM

It's PERFECT wink.gif

Now, your next assignment is to do the same drill for the F, D, E, A, B major scales! Go! biggrin.gif

Can't see any mistake here bro smile.gif It looks like you understand the way these are formed wink.gif Now, tell me, do you know how to harmonize a major scale? This means, using its notes to make up chords out of each one.

Ready? GO!

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Sep 1 2012, 04:04 PM

Sorry for late reply

E Major scale:

E F# G# A B C# D# E

E Major: E G# B
F#minor: F# A C#
G#minor: G# B D
A Major: A C# E
B Major: B D# F#
C# Minor: C# E G#
D# Dim: D# F# A

Bb Major Scale

Bb C D Eb F G A Bb

Bb Major : Bb D F
C minor: C Eb G
D Minor: D F A
Eb Major: Eb G Bb
F Major: F A C
G min: G Bb D
A Dim: A C Eb

I have a few questions

Why this notation of Maj Min Min Maj Maj Min Dim???
What is the Diminished????

Posted by: Himansu C Kerkar Sep 2 2012, 06:47 AM

was practicing desolation by lamb of god shud i post it here???

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 2 2012, 09:22 PM

hey Himansu!

Please post ANYTHING you are practicing and would like to share with me smile.gif

To answer your questions:

1) All the harmonized chords are made up of notes belonging to the scale you are harmonizing. The chord types are merely results of the notes used - for instance: In the case of E major, you will have F# minor as a chord and not F# major, simply because you need a root, which is F#, a third which can't be A#, because A# doesn't belong to the Emajor scale. But A does belong, so there we go, we have A as a third - a minor third that is. And we also have C# which is the 5th -> Minor chord 1 b3 5 (F# A C#)

That's the whole deal to it. Am I making sense? biggrin.gif

2) Diminished is a type of chord having a minor third and a flat 5th -> 1 b3 b5, this is it's formula. It usually belongs to the 7th step of a natural major scale.

What do you think?

Hehe! Sure thing amigo! Alright, now I would like to ask you to add 7ths to the scales you have harmonized (E major and Bb major)

The formula transforms like this:

From Maj min min maj maj min diminished major to M7 m7 m7 M7 7 m7 m7b5 M7

Here are the chord formulas:

M7 - 1 3 5 7
m7 - 1 b3 5 b7
7 - 1 3 5 b7
m7b5 - 1 b3 b5 b7

If everything is clear...GO! biggrin.gif

M Back after a long delay...... apologies.....

Tried the above exercise

E Major would be

EM7 : E G# B D#
F#M7 : F# A C E
G#m7: G# Bb D# F
AM7: A C# E G#
B7: B D# F# Ab
C#m7: C# EB G# Bb
D#m7b5: D# F Ab C#

Glad to hear that you're not stalling smile.gif Well, since you are ready to record, what say you if we should start working on a simple drop tuned lesson such as Metal Metrics 4? It features standard drop tuning chord forms made up from the root, fifth and octave.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-Metrics-4/

If you agree, please let me know and look over the lesson for your first REC take - or tell me if you find it difficult and you'd prefer starting with another one!

Let's rock!
