I get a lot offering to sell me Viagra and similar stuff.
I've tracked down the sender's IP and it's my wife's email account  . She must have been hacked...

Hahahaha yeah, I received a similar email by a guy renting a property but he said I had to transfer the money first so that he could reserve it for me, coincentially it was an awesome deal...I did respond though and told him to pick it up in a town near him, so maybe he went hahahah

By replying to spam or ever opening it to display (rather than text/header) only, normally lets the spammer mark your email address as active and they spam more or sell it on. This is a bad idea, once marked it's normally for life.
I personally get no spam, except on my hotmail account (which i use for online signups, newletters and contests, etc). Also if you use real names / words in your email address you tend to get targeted more or have posted it and it appears unsecured on websites (bots will crawl/test it). Most importantly don't open the attachments! PDFs, etc, are normally all infected trojans. I've seen so many: congrats your email has randomly been selected to win prize draw #41237, $100,000.00! Please full in the PDF form attached to claim your prize. When the file is just bait for you to curiously open, infecting yourself with a virus. Or the common: Your World of Warcraft account has been illegally accessed from different computers (IP addresses), and it is under infestigation. Your account details might have been stolen, but we would like to warn you that it's illegal to share your account or sell it onto other people. To protect your account we require you to login to your bizzard account via this link to confirm you as the current owner. If left unconfirmed for 7 days your account will be blocked for security reasons. Link is slightly off and is a phishing site (looks like the offical site but fake) to steal your details. A lot of spam has poor spelling or layout. A lot of curious people or kids (maybe even knowing it's spam) will still check them out and get marked or infected. Instead view full message header and you can tell by the return senders address if it's a fake pretty easily, they probably will spoof the address (try fake it).
