Strings are something that doesn't change from beginner to pro. I play D'Addario "EXL120" strings - 9-42 - best for me so far!

Well i think if youre currently practicing Legato style stuff, you can use what i use on my Ibanez, Which are Dean Markley Extra Lights, 8-38...they require a very light touch and sound beautiful, just dont use them if you want to detune, they dont sounds to good below D, And i dont go farther down than Eb with them. Ernie Ball's are good strings i use the super slinkeys (9-42) those are about the thinnest you can get. there are so many different string gauges to suit your needs. for example, if you play heavy metal or something that requires drop tuning, using thicker strings will 1. give you a better sound and 2. the strings wont be loose as they are thicker. but since you like to play jerryC sorta stuff i reckon super slinkeys (9-42) will be good. + with thinner string gauges you can bend easier. Ernie Ball Extra Slinky 8-38 Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9-42 Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10-46 Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 9-46 Ernie Ball Power Slinky 11-48 Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky 11-54 Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky 12-56 the hybrid string gauges are great. you have a low string gauge for the solos and a decent string gauge for riffing so that your guitar sounds heavy but the choice is up to you. hope me helped =] Yep that helped pretty much much. The Super Slinky and Hybrid Slinky interest me and the Extra Light ones from Dean Markley. By that thin ones I would be afraid tho that they can rip apart lol Got any tips by changing strings so they don't rip ? And how often should I change my strings by the way ? Let's say when I practice everyday like three hours. Oh I found something else were I wanted to know if it is really helpfull. It's this little thing here -> Planet Waves Grip Master <- What do you all think about the Aria Pro2 Magna Series E-Guitar by the way ? 10-46. Absolute minimum for many reasons. What kind of reasons ? lol -------------------- |

i have that gripmaster thing in medium tension and it helps a bit but i use it alot so if u dont have time for it, it might not be that great but that shouldnt be a problem since its small u can bring it any where. as for strings i use ghs 10-46. my freinds dont change there strings until one breaks but i change them every 2 or 3 weeks but some people change them more often

10-46. Absolute minimum for many reasons. It's funny - you say it's absolute minimum but Rusty, Vai, Satch, Mark Knofler, Michael Angelo use 9-42 -------------------- "It isn't how many years you have been playing, it's how many hours." -- Prashant Aswani "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" -- Michael Angelo Batio Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

Yea I would use that Grip Master pretty often. During the times where I can't practice like nights or early mornings as example. I have one too - my advice is use it but don't overdo it as its a pretty intensive workout. I used it on a business trip and ended up with a sore pinkie for a few days and had to lay off the guitar playing for a little while. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Yea I wouldn't overdo it. Hey Andrew which strings would you suggest ? Well I've used EB's for years, they always tune up really quickly and stay in tune well - used to use hybrids but I'm back on regular now - I find that the heavier strings give a better sound, and I actually like the greater resistance for bending, gives me better control (or at least it feels that way). Last time I put my guitar in for a tune-up at the tech, he put some Elixir strings on it - so far I love them, and think I might make a permanent switch - I get through a set of strings probably every month or two so its no big deal that they cost more. Also, there's no such thing as beginner strings - just strings you like or dislike I don't think any strings are bad - people just get attached to whatever brand they are using then try and defend them The answer is to try a different set every time you change them, eventually you will settle on a gauge and brand that you really like.
