Hey all, I thinks it's time to do some upgrading of my sound system for my computer based playing/recording. I've been thinking of getting a pair of monitors. How do you guys with monitors have your system setup? Does all sound come through the monitors? Or just guitar with all other sound coming through the souncard? Or other?

And recommendations are welcome too. Would like to keep the budget around $300 US for the upgrade.

cheers

Well all of your sound should go through monitors
which means your sound card should have either monitors outs
or just outs to connect monitors there.

I have these and I'm very satisfied with them.
And price here is cool as well, 299$ for pair,
they are active monitors so you won't need any amp to power them.

I use my guitar into a UX2 and form the UX2 into a pair of bi-amped Fostex PM.04, which are small enough to sit on a desktop but have a good quality sound, very good and transparent sound.

More info: I have a UX1 that I currently use as my sound card. The output of the UX1 goes into a sub/satellite PC sound system (a cheap one that is tongue.gif ) So if I understand what I have read so far, I would simply swap the monitors for the PC sound system?

It depends on the outputs of the UX1, the UX2 has two TR outputs (L and R) which go directly into the active monitors, each of which needs a power supply. The UX2 is linked/powered via USB into the pc and then I use something like gearbox or pod farm, only drawback is with programmes that need a lot more processing speed because the card in the UX2 isnt that great.

No sub. These have bass enhancer on the back. You can switch it on if you like. I am used to these monitors with the settings I've tested for a couple of months and I know exactly how much bass I need to hear in order to sound acceptable on any speaker. It's the same procedure with any other monitors until you get used to their sound.

Yee Haw! The Edirol MA-15D monitors came in today. So far I am very pleased! I was thinking something with such small drivers couldn't possibly have enough bass. There's plenty! And they put the sweet spot right in my ears too. Now I will need to build some shelving to organize my desk a little better.

Can anyone recommend good passive monitors? I own a decent amplifier so it would be shame not to use it.

Check out the ones Muris recommended. I believe they are based on a passive version that was well received.
The passive version is still available.
