Hello!

I've been thinking of getting some monitors to listen to my pandora/pod/toneport, but I have a doubt whether I should get passive or active monitors. What's the difference? Which one should I get?

Passive monitors

Passive monitors are just a pair of speakers. Like hifi speakers, they need an amplifier to produce sound. The quality of their sound largely depends on the quality of the amplifier: one low quality component in the chain lowers the overall sound quality. And our primary concern is the linearity of the sound: are all frequencies equally amplified and reproduced? The disadvantage of passive speakers, needing an external amplifier, can also be considered as an advantage: if any component in the chain breaks, you can simply replace this component, which is generally cheaper than replacing the whole chain. The most critical point lies in the fact that all components should fit well together, or the result is suboptimal.

QUOTE
Active monitors

Active monitors are speakers as well, but they have the amplifier built-in. They are easier to transport and set up, since less separate components are needed. In general, the amplifier is well optimized for the monitor. Main disadvanrtage is the fact that if one component does not operate well, you need to replace the whole chain.

There's some info smile.gif

I have active monitors my self, and they have a amp built-in like the text says, and they are great smile.gif

Hope it helps...

Yes,well all the best studios haw passive monitors but, prices of the speakers and preamp are insane. So,active monitors should be fine.Best buy in my opinion is Mackie HR 824(there are not cheap $1000 a pair)but works great. You haw Adam A7 in that class. So Active is the way if you are just home studio recorder.

here is the site for the Mackie smile.gif

Are you gonna connect them straight to Pandora/Pod or to your PC?

Anyhow, active monitors are easier to connect which means less cables. smile.gif

I have a pair of Adam A7s and can heartily recommend them, they are awesome for the price - never tried the Mackie's though, but they get good reviews smile.gif

Do you guys with monitors use them for general listening to music/watching movies too? Would they be something that you'd only want to plug in when it's time to work in your DAW or use with your amp modeller, or is it cool to use them for everything? And you wouldn't have to crank them right up to get benefits would you?

Also just to add, the active's bi-amped power is matched to the speaker as well. smile.gif

Thanks guys, I'm glad I asked because I need active ones then, as I don't have any separate amplifier.

Edit: I'm going to connect them straight to the pandora/toneport, though I might consider connecting them to the computer too sometimes.

You really don't have to cause when ur PX5D is on, your computer uses it as it's audio card... smile.gif Maybe it's judgement call, but I really don't see the point smile.gif

If you will be using it just for playing with Pandora/POD/etc.. I think it's throwing money.. smile.gif

Monitors are designed to help you with recording and mix, and the best one have flat response on all frequences making sure not to "paint the sound".. but if you would just use for playing then I would recommend some good desktop speakers.. maybe some 2.1 system by Genius or similar, 30 to 40 watts would be more than enough power for home playing smile.gif

But of course, it is only my opinion smile.gif

Go definitly with active monitors , you don't want to hustle with passive ones smile.gif You can connect your devices directly with no problems..Sound will be very good! Also I guess it doesn't hurt to listen to music and other computer stuff on them (though it won't sound exactly same like it would on a standard hi-fi system).

It is definitely recommendable that you buy active monitors, because you get all in one package. They are a bit more expensive, but a much easier option for home use.

Wrong.
That's what I do when I play along with the GMC lessons here.
Still use the box - Toneport GX in my case - as sound card, but then I don't need to hook up all sorts of monitor cables all over the place. smile.gif

I use active as well. Trust Soundforce 1200 - which sucks! laugh.gif

Try active monitors, and also remember that amplifiers are a ver fragile thing.
