I have always found it good to improvise the solo and actually head away from the area where the original solo was played (on the fretboard) is this bad? Should I stay in the same area?? Well as Liam is saying there are no rules for that - both are good. Pick the one which you think sounds the best! Only make sure you are switching position because you want to - not because you lack the theoretical knowledge to stay! We have got a Marty Fridman arpeggio lesson coming up by the way!
