Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: 80's Smooth Jazz by Guido Bungenstock

Hi GMC

This lesson is beautiful and at the same time very difficult.
Guido’s touch is exceptional and it seems so easy when I look at it.
Playing late back is a real challenge, I know I would get there with the years of practice.

I worked my ass off for the final licks played by the thumb.
It has flaws but I think I’ve done everything I can to give you the best of me

Thank you Gab for advices and many video
Thank you Guido for this leeson - it's a gift
Thank you Instructors for feedback

Impressive! I think this is a great showcase for your skills. Firstly the tone is great. This is something that is worth mentioning. Getting the tone right is never easy, especially at first. Tweaking the tone to match the lesson is a skill in itself. Next up your playing is killer here. The best part for me is the actual performance. I can tell that you like the tune and you put a lot of feeling in to playing. A dull performance can kill any take and it sure does not help in a rec. You are playing this with verve and it's a very good performance.

In terms of technique, the most impressive thing for me is your vibrato. Vibrato is one of the most tricky things to teach and to learn. It came naturally to me but it sure does not come naturally for everyone. I learned a lot about vibrato from a violin player that I knew. It's very different on violin but just focusing on it and hearing her vibrato and mine really helped. Learning about how to come in to vibrato and how to exit was the main thing I picked up from her. I've kept on it ever since. You are doing a good job of this. You don't use tepid/timid vibrato, it's nice and deep as it needs to be and you start slow and work up just as it should be. Your level of control is impressive!

Solid 8! Thought about giving a 10 but I want you to still have some room to grow!

Todd

Hey there! workign hard as usually and great choice of lessons as we're used to in your case smile.gif

Very first few notes give impression you do not have enough highs to make clear difference in tone when you differ the notes with different articulation or dynamics. This is why Guido's take seems to spread across wider range of sensitivity. His veyr soft strokes get the warmth and stronger ones cut with more crisp. I know you are quite good at dynamics but maybe not with this tone configuration.

...sometimes tone affect the way we feel more or less inspired while playing.

For me in this one you got too square using mostly medium nad hard picking while Guido goes really low with his ultra soft touch on some notes - remember that it also requires some angle of the pick adjustment.

For me that's the point here. At other fields you did some great work. You really need to just brighten the tone with more presence and start to use way more softer pickign as well.

This is an extremely musical take, and even the last thumb part is very close!

I agree with Darius focus on tone here. Although it's already very good - you might get closer by tweaking your tone using only very light picking. It should then tonally explode when you use some picking force.

This is the reason why exceptionally dynamic tone goes hand in hand with great picking control. And technique wise you are def ready for this!

Keep up the amazing playing mate 👊
