In Part III of our Best Metal Guitars for Metal 2021, let’s start off with an ERG!

SCHECTER OMEN 8
Nothing screams Metal like 8 strings of chugg. The Omen 8 features 8 strings of fun on a basswood body with a maple neck at 26.5 scale (The longer scale length creates more string tension and lets the low strings have more tension and better tone) with a rosewood (rosewood is getting more and more rare per the recent rules put in place) fingerboard. The pickups look like EMG but they are not. They are Schecters own “Diamond Plus” ceramic humbuckers. The bridge is a custom hard tail. Not that long ago, buying an 8 string guitar would be pricey. Then they became much more common and got quite a bit less pricey. This is a lot of guitar for the money and a great price for a 8 string. The pickups are NOT active, which may count as a strike against this guitar since many folks looking for an 8, also want active pups, still, it’s well put together and a solid axe for only $390.

CHARVEL PRO-MOD JOE DUPLANTIER SAN DIMAS STYLE 2

The “Metal Telecaster” is officially a “thing” and really has been for quite some time. Jim Root was playing tele shaped guitars that he stuffed high gain humbuckers in for many years before it caught on and became trendy. This is the signature axe for the front man from Gojira. This bad boy features a mahogany body and neck at 25.5 inch scale with an ebony fingerboard with large pearloid inlays. The pickups are two Dimarzio humbuckers with a Joe Duplantier Signature in the bridge and a PAD 36th Anniversary in the neck. Tone controls are a bit limited as it’s just got a volume knob and a 3 way toggle for pickup selection. Also, the bridge is more les paul than telecaster. So it’s a bit of a Frankenstein guitar, which one would expect from a Metal Tele. It’s not cheap either at $900.

EVH WOLFGANG STANDARD
A bit more traditional, at this point in time anyway, is the EVG Wolfgang Standard. This shape came with Eddie as he made his way through various vendors. It followed him to it’s final resting place at his own EVH guitars label. It features a basswood body and roasted maple neck and fretboard set at 25.5 scale. The pickups are EVHs own brand and are controlled with a master volume and tone knob with a 3 way toggle pickup switch. It features a locking trem as is required on any EVH guitar intended for creating his signature whammy tricks. Some folks love this body shape, some folks find it not pointy enough for Metal. It’s a very solid and playable design with a 12-16” compound radius fingerboard. All in all, a great value $600.

DEAN ML DIME O FLAGE
Dime left behind a great legacy of music and some very cool guitar designs. While it’s true that he was only signed to Dean for a very short time before his passing, they have gone full tilt with the variety of axes that they have given the Dime name to. Recently, Dime’s estate has brought a legal action against Dean guitars so it’s not clear how much longer these designs will have Dime’s name on them. Also, Dean has lost several of their top artists including Dave Mustaine of Megadeth among others. Clearly Dean are in a rough patch. Still, this shape just screams Metal. It features a mahogany body and neck set at 24.75 inch scale with a pau ferro fingerboard. The reason for the shorter scale is that Dime liked it that way since it reduced string tension and made the guitar easier to play and made it more expressive during bending and vibrato. I’ve owned several of these and they are truly very expressive instruments. The bridge pickup is a Dean DMT humbucker and there is a Duncan SH13 in the neck. Hardware is solid with a locking Floyd Rose Special trem and Grover tuners. It’s a big, pointy, hunk of Metal guitar for only $750.

ESP LTD STEF CARPENTER SIGNATURE SC-607 BARITONE
Rounding out this group is the double cutaway LTD from Stef Carpent of Def Tones fame. It features a mahogany body with a maple neck through body design at 27 inch scale. Yup, this is a long necked baritone guitar. It’s a 7 string so it’s an ERG and the longer scale makes it ideal for down tuning. Its’ a hard tail with a tun o matic bridge and locking ltd tuners. The pickups are Fishman Fluence humbuckers in a unique bridge / middle design. When asked why he puts his pickups in this configuration, Stef says that it’s because he liked the way it looked when he saw it on the Kramer Nightswan guitar. That guitars pickup config was designed by Buddy Blaze and it was adapted by kramer. So it’s not about tone, Stef just likes how this looks. It’s a long necked Metal monster that can be yours for $1,200.
