How Much Drive Space Is Enough? Options

Recently I realized I'd reached a semi nutty level of drive storage and I started to transition to cloud based storage. I had two drives fail on the same day which was unprecedented and it made me reconsider my entire strategy. So going from ...


and trimming everything down a bit, which took a couple of weeks to be honest. I'd kept stuff that I just had no use for and it was time to clear it out. I burned anything I thought I might need later to DVD and current stuff all went to a new PRO 100 PLAN at DROPBOX.com

I've got 100 Gigs online at dropbox and after cleaning house, I've reduced all my data to less than half that!! I didn't realize how much stuff I'd just kept around just in case and I had two copies of ALL OF IT. Because I had a backup drive for every drive I had running. So I was duplicating data that I didn't use anymore.

What's great about cloud storage is that they do the backups for you and you can have access to all the files on any computer you have. I must say, this transition has really allowed me to see the value of "cloud storage" in a practical, daily, kind of way. The plan runs around $10 a month which is around $120 per year so we will see how it goes as things progress

Anyone else jumped in to the cloud?

I really like the concept of cloud storage but I still can't really justify the price of the most popular services. I still use one cloud service which I got as promo by buying some hardware devices and it is handy but I'll probably not continue using it past the promotion period (2 years).

What I find troubling with the price is that for 1 year of cloud access you can buy a very neat and small external hard drive with usually more space available on it than on the cloud. These will come with 2 year warranty usually and can last a long time. I currently use a Toshiba external usb drive for my Time Machine backups. It looks really cool and matches the Mac silver style. Of course, the risk of having your own "home cloud" backups is that hard drives can and will fail at one point while storing online will keep them safe forever due to duplicate backups they make etc.

I think cloud storage is the future and that prices will start coming down (same as with harddrives which are very cheap nowadays).

Hmm. Well, buying a drive sorta defeats the entire purpose of using the cloud right? OF course, you need to have some drives, but if you spend your cloud money on one more drive, then you haven't gained anything imho. The whole idea of cloud based storage is

*It's "Persistent"
-No matter what, your house can burn down, your drives can get stolen, they can fail, etc. But your cloud is still there.

*It's Always Backed Up
-If you work from a cloud hosted folder, like dropbox, your work is ALWAYS backed up. No matter what. You don't need to remember, or do anything, it's just always backed up.

*It's Accessible From Anywhere
-Your laptop or desktop, your friends studio, your grandmas house, your girlfriends house, etc. You can get to your files anywhere, anytime.

*It's a God Send for Collaboration
-If you are working with other people, you can simply a link to your files on your cloud and they can share them anywhere, any time.

For these simple reasons, cloud based storage seems to be just far and away a better option than simply buying one more small drive doesn't it? Again, to each his own, but I spend $10 a month for a "Pro" plan from Drop box and I gotta say I consider it money well spent. I'm working on a song with SPOCK right now where we are sharing logic project files that would be impossible just about any other way.
