Hey miss smile.gif Long time no see! Let's see where you're at, eh?

Posted by: ninany27 Nov 3 2013, 02:17 AM

Cosmin!

I'm back from the abyss. I am instant messaging you a link to my progress video and password.

Let me know what to move forward with. As you know, I'm interested in the Balkan rhythm stuff as well as rock riffs, but I'm also still really not up on anything beyond the basic open chords, etc. So ideally a combo on rhythm exercises, and also generic stuff that everyone should know.

Cheers, mate, and thanks for your help.

Hey there!

I watched the video and I must say you did a great job! What i would like to suggest now is that we quicken up the pace and follow a more structured practice routine, based on a weekly schedule that I will build for ya based on what you need to work on! Do we have a deal? smile.gif

Sure thing, here you go:

* How long have you been playing the guitar?
I've had a guitar for the last 15 years and every month I learn a new song here and there, but I never seriously invested in playing.

* What do you feel your current level is?
An Advanced Beginner, or Early Intermediate. Fairly confident with C, D, E, G, A, Dm, Em, Am chords. Not so great with barre chords or any more advanced chords. Never had lessons, so mainly just learned from books and online.

* What sort of theoretical knowledge do you have so far?
I understand how keys work and how basic scales are built, but I have nothing memorized. I can read the treble clef.

* How much time/day can you spend practicing?
To be honest, probably only 15 minutes or so, as I work two jobs and mainly focus on the songwriting.

* What are your favorite techniques?
I love basic but punchy electric guitar riffs (White Stripes, AC/DC), as well as percussive / rhythmic stuff on the acoustic (Gogol Bordello, for example).

* What would you like to improve?
1. Chord knowledge, so I can back myself and other people up on a variety of different songs.
2. Rhythm, so I can do the above in a much more interesting way.

* What is your current experience as a player (band, studio, home)?
Home. I use the guitar to compose music sometimes, but that's it.

* What gear do you own?
1. A nice custom Maton (Australian brand) steel string acoustic.
2. A cheap, strat-type electric by Legend.
3. A mini Marshall amp.

* Name a few favorite artists that inspire your playing.
- Pearl Jam
- ACDC
- White Stripes
- Kultur Shock
- Gogol Bordello
- Bruce Springsteen
- All the old Balkan rock guys

Hope that's sufficient.

Essentially, I just want to improve overall so I can back myself up live.

Thanks mate, looking forward to your lesson plan.

Hey miss!

Here's what I have in mind ...

For each lesson that we tackle:

- understand the theoretical concepts
- learn the lesson structure
- learn each part and reproduce it slowly with the metronome
- put all the parts together and practice them against the slowest available backing track
- work your way up tempo with the available backing tracks

Day 1- 4 - one lesson, since that's what your time allows smile.gif I thought that understanding the principles of funk would be a great place to begin with for more complex rhythms: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/i-got-rhythm-guitar6-funk-basics1/

Day 5 --6 - Revision (you practice every lesson, assuming you that you already know their structures and you can play them) - focus on timing, definition, clean playing, articulations and details!

Day 7 - Revision and recording - if you wish - and writing conclusions so that we may draw a line and see what have you learned in that week wink.gif

How does it sound?

Cosmin

Hey miss smile.gif I tried the link, but it says that my access is denied, not giving me any options to insert any password or something... sad.gif

Apologies, looks like I had it set by accident to 'only me' viewing rights.

Please try now with that same password as the last video:

Hey missie! That was very good! Your timing is dead on which is pretty much awesome! wink.gif

I know what you are talking about - those are some harmonics which appear each time you don't thoroughly mute the strings - it will be there sometimes when you don't focus enough, but frankly it didn't bother my ears one bit. Now if you wish to strive for perfection, focus on muting the strings perfectly with your left hand and it will go away wink.gif How about tackling the next lesson in line, following the same schedule parameters? Warm up with this first one, which you already know and then work on this second one smile.gif As usual, a video will show me your progress, so if you like this method of working, please let me know smile.gif I am thinking that at the end of these funk lessons, I will send you a backing track containing only drums and you will play around with your own grooves, derived from what you learned here biggrin.gif How does that sound? http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/I-got-rhythm-guitar7-funk-basics-II/

Hey there missie! smile.gif

I watched the vid and I must say that you have a great talent for rhythm playing! biggrin.gif Congrats!

I would stay just a bit longer with this one as, towards the middle, you are not as tight as in the rest of the take - it's most likely just a matter of focus here, so please try another take, paying attention to sticking very tightly with the metronome and if everything is ok, we can move on smile.gif

No worries, I'll revisit. I think Gabriel mentioned as well, around 0:46 that part is a little iffy? I lose some of the consistency.

Precisely! You have a slip there that I picked up - but it's most likely due to a slight de focusing, so no worries, I'm sure you can get this one straight in no time and then, we can move on smile.gif
