GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Southern Metal Collaboration!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 20 2009, 07:23 PM

Hi GMC! This is my new collaboration based on my lesson called "http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Southern_Metal_Solo/".

The idea of this collaboration is to let GMC:ers with different levels explore this style of playing and apply the pentatonic licks learnt before.

You can check the original lesson to learn some easy Southern metal licks, as well as other rocker lessons like "Black Stone Cherry style", "Zakk Wylde Style" and many others where you can find rocker/bluesy licks. There are many lessons like those in my lessons archive.

The backing is a dropped D riff composed with D pentatonic minor scale. So you can use D pentatonic minor and D blues scales for the solo. I repeated the riff twice but feel free to loop the backing if you are very inspired!

DEADLINE: 5th September

ok, let's start rocking!!

Maximus multiband compressor/limiter. I've been misusing it for a few months now, usually with good results. Mostly what you get from it is overall loudness. Sometimes a track has already been compressed plenty and you'll distort the sound, but sometimes you get to hear more of the track. At least, in my old --damaged-- ears, it tends to sound better as long as I don't over-do it.

Thanks for listening smile.gif

Also I feel that the tone is not aggressive enough (although I broke 2 high e strings while jamming over this backing track biggrin.gif ), so could you please advice how to make it better (maybe some EQ tweaks)?

Why so down? That's great playing! Just maybe normalize the guitar track and that should make it big enough?

I don't know another name for it (similar to compression I guess, but selective) but the waveform is increased in level until the highest of its peaks reaches 0db (normal) which can drag any lower peaks up in proportion. If you have any peaks clipped, it won't do anything at all. If you have more headroom, it fills that headroom with the sound in your track.

This is not the best explanation, and hopefully Gabriel will notice your question and answer it better as he is a properly trained sound engineer if I remember correctly.

I think I got what you mean smile.gif But it looks like my waveform is clipped most of the time huh.gif

Never had anything like this before, it's probably because of my wah, it seems that the clips occur when the wah is in its treble-most position.

Posted by: jafomatic Sep 4 2009, 09:41 PM

Some wahs have a little boost or pre-amp kinda feature. I generally dislike the idea of that feature, though I cannot say I've used them myself (aside from foolin' around at a music store).

I would go to great lengths to avoid that much clipping, maybe see if that wah feature can be turned off or find some kind of software attentuation or powersoak? I dunno much about your rig but I'm pretty sure that clipping will drive you crazy after a while.

Hi there Gabriel! I recorded something today, it is not what I wanted, but... --> I haven't played for quite a while, and first time in my life, I have blisters/bubbles (don't know the right word) on my fingertips, so I can't record anything better as my fingertips hurts badly blink.gif blink.gif I think that those blisters should disappear in few days, but I got them yesterday, and today is the deadline.

So I upload what I have, and will try to replace it with a take on better preset and with some minor tweaks here and there if the blisters go away, before You do the mix. Of course if You would have to wait for it, than don't do it, I don't want other people to wait for the mix and comments because of me.

Your take is really good! Awesome playing! smile.gif It seems that you recorded the take clipped. This is the reason why you can't hear a clear sound. When you cut the peaks of a take you loss the high frequencies where it has the sound "details" or maybe we could call it clarity. And tt's very difficult to fix a clipped take with EQ in the mix. As jafomatic said, you shoud try to attenuate with any level parameter (previous to your sound card) your guitar when you use the wah wah. Anyhow this take is ok so if you wat we can use it for the collab!

Thanks you.

Sorry Gabriel, but I've chosen not to record my re-thought faster entry as I simply can't play it cleanly enough. I'll just have to stick with what I submitted, even though I'm not happy with it due to not having any real southern metal feel to it other than some wah and the scale.

My other version contained some fast 3nps stretched AP runs across the high e and b, similar to the end of the no more tears solo (ozzy), but with a stretch, and what really got me was the ascending minor pent on the 10th fret going to a 17th to 12th stretch on the high E, then coming back down. I simply can't play it cleanly!

Anyhow, that is all.

Don't worry! Well done! You did a great choice. It has no sense to record something that you can't play perfect. Take your time to practice that type of licks. I remember some Pablo Vazquez lessons based on those Zakk Wylde style licks.
