I don't know how most members here will react to this kind of discussion, so I don't want to end up soliciting drug use in anyway or to offend anyone who for any reason is passionately against the use of any chemicals to alter the mind. That's my disclaimer: If you can't relate or want to complain, please refrain from posting...keep this topic clean.

---

Right, so it's a vague discussion. How, if at all, do drugs influence your musical habits? Do you write music high, play shows drunk, drink at practice? Shoot up and record a video lesson for GMC?

Personally: During practices, we (my band) usually bring anywhere from a 6 pack to a 6 pack for each of us, depending on whether or not we need to concentrate on details. I find it really makes practicing stage show much easier...and when it comes to our live shows, every member knows the right amount that we can drink before we'll become sloppy. All the benefits, none of the sloppy drunk playing.

I also enjoy cannabis for private practicing and occasionally writing. Fun fun.

hmm, i believe you dont need drugs whatsoever to be able to write/compose/play better in any way. Music is music, drugs are drugs. Thats just my opinion.

Let's just say that I come up with some cool licks when I am under influence. But I also do that when I am sober. I don't do drugs to make me play better, or different. If I happen to be doing them and play, well whatever happens, happens. Just gotta remember to record it! laugh.gif

P.S Drugs are bad, and illegal and I don't think this topic should be on GMC. So expect admin to be here with bells on.

I used to get high and play but after a few panic attacks i no longer smoke. I like to play tipsy though. To me it amplifies the live experience ten fold. I never drink when i practice alone or if it's a private jam session.. house party shows are a different case.

I think the whole drug addicted musician thing is played out though and so is POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. There is honestly nothing wrong with this topic apart from the fact that some of our members are in their early teens. lol.

Agreed. Although im fine with the topic, its good to discuss these kind of things imo. But yes, im sure its just a matter of time for the admin to put some rules here, so keep it clean.

I like to get baked and practice..... I find I am more relaxed and the music flows more for me. I also enjoy and appreciate music much more when I listen to it baked.

I dont suggest to anyone to start taking drugs to alter their musical whatever. Its just a choice you have to make... When you become 18

Also I put getting stoned much higher above drinking as just a general experience and also a health thing.... I think drinking is much worse for society too but thats not what this thread is about.

Ohh and kind of on topic I guess... I have a question to all you Opeth fans, Do you think Opeth gets baked?

hmm i think i tried playing guitar once and i was so baked that i dropped the guitar and left a dent on it.

I do like listening to music while high. I often do it but i have been sober for 2 1/2 months. It gives like a different feeling. Especially listening to sludge, stoner, drone, or ambient stuff.

I have been wanting to try salvia lately. Any thoughts?

The effects of using substances when playing, practicing etc. probably vary from person to person. What may help one person think more clearly may totally shut off another's mind.

I myself don't feel the need to put alcohol/drugs in myself when I'm playing or listening to music and since I'm also a runner, I avoid cigarettes and illegal drugs altogether because it's not worth using anything that can affect my athletic performance. I do get together with some friends about once a month to have some drinks, but that's as adventurous as I get when it comes to that sort of stuff.

In the end, it all comes down to personal choice; the decision to use drugs for musical purposes or in general is nobody's business but your own wink.gif

I have tryed salvia a couple of times and I honestly wouldnt reccomend it but if you do make certain you are in a comfortable dark room with people you really trust as it can be very intense. It only lasts about 5 minutes but its extremely intense and you deffinitly wont be able to do anything like playing guitar... let alone function properly. Also be warned you can get bad anxiety also..

Dude im actually curious to see what happens on this post wether it survives or not tongue.gif Im not at all offended by the topic because i feel it's reality and life ,not saying nothing on here that a teen wouldnt see at home on the T.V but we do need to make sure that no one recommends or pushes there own opinion's on other's here ,then i would feel it's a bad topic.I'm going to lay it out though in a non-promoting way (as i do not advise anyone to take this route) just give you my own experience's and if my post get's erased or edited i totaly understand, but not because i said something bad but rather it's not the place.I leave that up to GMC.

Well to answer the question,
I think you play or makeup music based on the mood or way you feel,so if you are more relaxed ,sped up, spaced out ect ect it would alter the type of music you make up.Example one riff you may play while drinking a few beer's may sound ten times cooler than when your straight. This can have a bad effect aswell because you can be so not in a clear mind that what you think is talent is actually just garbage.

Yes i do feel drugs influence your musical habbits, but at a terrible price.Because it not only influences your musical habbits it influences your lifestyle ,who you are as a person, and what you stand for.I'm 24 now and me and my old friends all started playing music when we were like 14.Back then we would smoke daily and maybe drink and that was about it.It was fun to jam like that at the time.So what ended up happening from there? As we all do after are teens we had to go are own way, today 2 of my 4 friends are addicted to Herion and anything that goes in a needle, the other one is a alchohlic and in Iraq ,the last one is a casual drinker at the most in the Air Force.Myself i smoked all the way upto about 3 years ago and was in a horrible accident. Now im prescribed pain killer's and i take them because they are needed but are also enjoyable.Rarly drink but on special occasions and thats it for me.So tell me out of myself and my four friends which one sounds like there doing the best in life ??

Smoking pot is something i honestly dont see much worse than drinking.By saying that i dont mean i think there fine to do everyday.I would never want to smoke pot again like i did before though.I regret so much stuff back then.It made me lazy and all i ever did was sit and sit ,there's a whole world out there and i just dont want to experience it sleepy and hungry all day tongue.gif The way i look at it im married now and i cant be a perfect example for my wife and children if im taking nap's ,always red eyed, never wanting to get off the couch and eating all are food laugh.gif .Honestly this part you wont understand unless your older or are grown up,i would never want my child to smoke pot ,drink daily or take anyother kind of illegal drug it would break my heart sad.gif .When i was 14 i remember saying yep i will let my son smoke pot once he is 14,to me thats garbage now and just shows me my age then and how i've grown up now.I hope to set the best example for my kids possible.

The choice is your's but you should always be in controll of your life not a drug controlling you.

First of all. I tried Salvia like 2 years ago. It was CRAZY, haha, thats one thing i will do again. So i bought from the store that was mind altering effects and eveyrthing. Its all legal here, but see it was sooo weak, that it didnt do nothing. sad.gif Money wasted.

But I like to get buzzin off of some beer everynow and again. Its very relaxing, doesnt help the playing much, but it does make it that much more fun.

That is a very good post Shredmandan... You deffinitly bring up some good points. I have actually been smoking since I was 13 aswell but I do kind of regret it but at the same time not as it has made me who I am now and I could see things would have been much different without it. But also on that note I wish alot of the time I hadnt abused it in the way I had and hadnt started so early and just been more respectful of the sacred plant. I am only 19 now but I feel I am fairly mature for my age compared to my peers and I would say if I had kids I wouldnt want them smoking pot but as soon as they turned 18 it would be completely upto them. I actually see drinking as a much worse habbit but I wont get into that now..

Glad you see some of my points. smile.gif And i'm not putting anyone down for what they do as it really works different for us all and we all want different things in life.Just to make it short i've done just about everything and if i was asked by a 13 year old wether it was worth it?I would not even hesitate to tell them NO.Once you start something your in a whole new world so if you never start your in the best position possible and i think many would agree with that. wink.gif

well i started smoking weed when I was 19. I stopped for no apparent reason. I wasnt big on smoking it everyday either. I think the most i had during a month is 2-3 green sessions.

Honestly, when my kids turn 18... they can do whatever they want with there life. If you keep your kids from the bad things in life, then there is no life learned.

One of my cats, "White Kitty", acts like she is on drugs sometimes. I just say "stop it White Kitty, quit acting crazy", and she settles down.

Drugs are great I think, i figure the more doped up people there are out there with crap for brains, the less competition, so the easier it will be for me to get what I want.

Haha, i love your posts man. You always bring your cats into things tongue.gif. Its great haha.

And aint that the truth. Im glad I got out of drugs. I got highly addicted to pills, and was that way for 2 years. from 15-17. Man i could sit and literally play guitar for like 244943 hours straight with no sleep. And still be ready for anohter 89257403 hrs. Man that was great, until i hopped off of them. Then i noticed i was worse off before. They just ruined my life, wasted TONS of money on it, and didnt try in school (that wasnt because of drugs though tongue.gif), and they made my life really stressful. They only helped when i was on them, but the only help they gave me was esacping reality, and when i came back i was worse off before. Then i got smacked in the face by reality, and realized that it wasnt right. So seeing what it did to my body, and everythign. I lost like 30 pounds and was weighing like 120 when i stopped them. Im now at 150 biggrin.gif. Also my supplier kinda ran out, but that doesnt matter tongue.gif. Im glad i got off them, and I dont recommend anybody to get into pills.

Very good point Ryan smile.gif
This is whati meant in my post about people controlling there life not the drugs.I dont think people realize how hard pills can be .I can extremly relate to how you said you could stay up for 244943 hours and not sleep, thats me now.I'm just going to say when i first got home from the hospital i didnt know what i was messing with because i only smoked before my accident.I will tell you i found out the hard way that if you abuse prescription medicaine that it will abuse you 10 times harder i promise you.Withdrawl flu like symptom's feeling like you cant move, mood swings ,cying this is what you feel like after you abuse them and then run out. After doing that for the 1st few months i realized quick that i had to take it right or not at all.Since i take my med's exactly as directed by doctor and im fine, but the cravings never go away.Thats the part that you live with forever and cope with. This stuff is nothing like smoking a joint and the only reason im saying anything about this topic today is to hopefully get one person to learn from my own personal mistakes . wink.gif
