Let's continue our work with box/pent shapes and add some open string bits in! This lick uses a strike on the open string and then two hammer ons per string. The main idea is just to add open string notes to a box/pent shape here, so picking is up to the player. Pick it all, pick some, whatever works. Just make sure to hit the open strings and mute enough to where there is not a lot of extra string noise.
Once you get this type of approach down pat, it can be applied to any shape/scale/key. Of course, using the key of E and scales in E works well. Working on the second octave up, near 12th fret, and using the 3 fretted E root notes that happen at the second octave comes in handy. (12th fret E string, 14th fret D string, 12th fret high E string, in addition to the open low E and open High E.)

*Tablature shows ascending part.
See if you can reverse it and do the descending bit without tab.
It's the same idea, just descending per the vid.

Take 1 up for scrutiny Sarge. I tried a bit of improv but couldn't really get anything.

You have fine taste in guitars and tshirts per usual smile.gif The lick is working great! I love this lick. It works great in solos. It works really great in the key of E. Any backing with a blues or minor progression works great. Give it a whirl on a youtube backing and let me know what you think smile.gif

Well done on playing here as you are doing great on the "pick once hammer many" which is a core technique imho and one that many players never develop. It leverages the best bits of having open strings with some hammer on bits.

I liked your improv!! Creative use of these things is what it's all about!!

WELCOME BACK!!!!!! Great to see you ripping it up again!

As for the lick, BINGO!! That's it! I like the picked and hammered versions. Both work great in a solo as well. This lick is constructed using a pentatonic scale and open strings. You can construct licks like this just by using a scale shape that you like and starting on the string that is the same key of the scale you are working in. In this case it's the key of E and the E pentatonic scale. Some times, you may hit an open string that is not in the scale, but don't let that stop you. Trust your ear when building licks. You got this one!!! You just...

Nice!! This one works well done as a "Strike once, Hammer Many" type of lick, but you can pick each note as well if you like. It works either way. I'm doing it in the strike once hammer many way in the vid, but strike per note is just as good for this one. You've clearly got this lick well in hand. I love these open string licks. They give a free string with the open so you get one without needing to fret it. You've got very good technique going here with is what I'd expect as you have great technique going in every vid so far. smile.gif Yet another great job.

You just..

LEVELED UP!!!

Well done!! This one requires a solid mute with all the open strings and your muting has come a long way. Also your picking is good and clean here. Best of all, you end up with a nice big vibrato!!! Your vibrato has also come a long way and it's great to see. You are learning things in bootcamp that have helped with quick licks and learning things in quick licks that are helping in bootcamp. keep it up!!
