Hi there!

Oh man, how this song has many tasty licks.

I made this cover from scratch. I used AmpliTube Fender for guitars and AmpegSVX for bass. I find it hard to get a decent clean tone from those amp modeling software, it´s easier with rock and metal sounds. I used Superior Drummer 2.0 for the drums.

Listen, and feel free to comment. smile.gif

This is a great take.

VERY nicely done man! smile.gif Did you write all parts in MIDI and assign the instruments? I would assume with the time spent on this, you had to play the guitar parts tongue.gif ...And again, nicely done!

Thanks guys.

I played everything on this with real instruments of course, the guitars and bass. wink.gif

But about the drums, I imported a midi file from GP5. I didn´t write the midi notes myself, but I had to edit them alot, because it didn´t sound right, so I spent few hours doing that. I had to make up an ending because the original file just got cut off somwhere at the end. Then I just assigned Superior Drummer to play it. I´m not good at mixing drumst, but I did my best. The drums sound a little wilder than on the record, but they sound closer to the live version of the song.

I played the lead guitar in fingerstyle, ala Knophler, it´s the only way to get it right. smile.gif

Great take! I love your tone!
I love Knopfler too.
Funny you posted this, I just uploaded a Sultans of swing inspired solo. :-)

Very cool man, sounds great, drums are bit louder and punchy then needed, but I think it all sounds very good. Great job! smile.gif

Very nice take. The sound of the strat is so identical to Knopfler, and the fingerpicking makes it hard to tell the difference between you and the man himself smile.gif Well done!!!

I thought he used some sort of pick and left his extra fingers open for hybrid picking.

No he usually don´t use a pick, but he uses it sometimes when he plays rythm parts. I saw a video where he is explaining his picking style, and he uses the thumb for all the bass notes and sometimes even on the treble strings. That´s breaking the rules as he calls it, because that is not the usual way to pick, the thumb should not be used on the treble strings, but he likes to bend the rules. smile.gif

And thanks for the comments all, very kind. smile.gif

Congratulations! It's quite an effort to nail down this song, but it's very rewarding (for me it took 4 months tongue.gif )

One or another lick comes a little offtime, but all in all you did really a great job.

I like your tone, but it seems to me use middle+bridge to play it right? I prefer playing it with neck+middle, but that´s a matter of taste.

Once again, congrats! wink.gif

Thanks Gus.

You are right I use middle+bridge pickups, I think it sounds the best, I first recorded the solos with nec+middle, but it didn´t sound smooth enough for me so I recorded again using middle+bridge. I´m not sure what position Knophler uses on the recording, mabye he switches between potitions. Doesn´t really matter though, it all sounds good, just different for each player. smile.gif

Hey man! Colour me impressed, this is a spot on recording and you nailed that Knopfler sound beautifully. Drum editing always takes time. All round you've done a great job here and the time you've spent and the dedication to detail all shows. Marvellous work!

Thanks alot man. I post covers evey now and then here. It´s the most fun and exciting way to practice and learn songs in my opinion. You learn the song, and then look forward to recording it and listen to the results. Very motivating. smile.gif

Too bad i can´t sing, but mabye I should try, to make the covers complete. But people are free to send me vocal tracks for this song or any other of my covers if you like. wink.gif

Well played!

A quick note on pickup position tho,
Mark often uses brigde+middle position when he plays solos on Start,
not always but h does.
Neck+middle position probably sounds sweeter to most of us
but it doesn't cut through the mix so great as brigde+middle does,
that might be the reason as well. smile.gif
