Is there a lesson for soloing over 5th chords (power chords)? I know a few scales to use over em (minor pentatonic, sometimes major, blues scale etc) is there anything else to use? Seems to be getting old, maybe I just need a few new tricks n licks because soloing over the stuff I know now gets old after a few hours!

I have learned a lot in the past 2 years or so of studying guitar (and music theory) but i'm stressing on putting it all together. I can improvise like no other on a scale or mode using the scale or mode and chord tone (Or arpegios or whatever it's called) and well, im just starting to look at other people's solos (like in songs and stuff) and it seems to me they are using mostly the same techniques I am only on a larger scale, like playing modes up and down the neck only together, something I can not do. So my question is, if I learn scales/modes all up and down the neck, will I learn different types of licks? Because usually when I improvise, I tend to play the same thing over and over again or I usually end up doing so. When writing solo's, do you play over the whole neck on a scale/mode while using arpegios or is each solo unique?

There are so many scale positions it's scaring me. So I understand every scale has a formula, would it be efficient to learn the formula and play the notes based off of that, or memorizing each pattern and play that from your head. See I tend to freak out over what is most efficient for my mind. I'm trying to memorize the formula for lets say a Minor Pentatonic scale, but my mind doesn't really go that fast to remember every note so it takes me forever to play the scale based off the formula instead of the pattern, but there are so many patterns I won't be able to memorize them all.

Any ideas? huh.gif

--edit--
and if a formula is better, which is a better way to memorize: off a forumla like 1 2 3 5 6 or off half and whole steps? I hope this makes since, not sure how to describe it that well.

Im having trouble understanding minor keys. So from what i understand, the 6th degree in a major key is the relatve minor of that key. So like A is the relative minor of the key of C. So the key of A goes like A B C D E F G, but when do you know a song is in a minor key or a major key?

I just noticed this after a year of playing (I am a fast player), I couldn't play as fast as I normally could. Do you think this happens because it is colder outside, causing my fingers to stiffen? Or am I just going crazy?!
