Well, the 60 watt Laney practice amp is great for bedroom practice and jamming with a few other people but I'm finally starting to need to play in live situations and am starting to need a bigger and better one.
The thing is, I know virtually nothing about amps... That's where you come in. The local music store just has practice amps kinda like what I have now (it's not a big store chain or anything) so I can't go anywhere with my ax to test amps very often. So what would you suggest, my budget is I guess up to about 1000 USD or so, but obviously it would be nice to spend a bit less  I'm not holding any false expectations though, quality is pricy. Nooo, please, don't get that marshall. It's a nice price for a stack, but you can do much better. If you want a halfstack, I would suggest increasing your budget. Try this for a decent combo. Even 50 watts will probably never be used past halfway on stage in most small clubs. You could also try looking for used stuff.

Well, with your increased budget you have some more options. The best are probably line 6's offerings as suggested by outlaw, or this or this. Both have more than enough power for your needs. I would suggest the peavey classic. I do not endorse peavey in any way, they just happen to have great products in that price range.

For hi gain death metal - I suggest you wait for the release of Peaveys 6505 1x12 combo. It's 60w and probably the best amp in the genre, being released Q1 2009 and it'll cost you $800.
Fits your budget and is hi gain. They (Peavey) are also releasing a new model, 3120, that they labled as hi-gain. It's said to cost around $1350. But my tip is the 6505 combo. EDIT: I did a search and it's out feb 28, http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEV6505. Never mind, that was the 212 not the 112 that'd fit your budget Here's Peavey homepage http://www.peavey.com/news/article.cfm/act...52/20091501.cfm and it says Q2 not Q1 as I said. But I still think it's worth the wait. You wont get a higain amp cheaper. Well, the Bugera then but they tend to have a lot of faults I've heard. I vote on the 6505 head also, you can get used ones pretty cheap (500$-700$) and new ones aren't that much expensive. But if you buy an amp head, you gotta buy a cabinet too and if you are not ready to pay for a cab, the combo version of 5150 (earlier version of 6505, but pretty much the same amp) or the new 6505 combo like Mickem mentioned are good choices.
Some ENGL's are killer amps for metal, but usually are very expensive, especially the Invader. I wouldn't suggest the Thunder amp (my buddy has it and by itself the tones are not very good for metal IMO) but the ENGL Screamer can get pretty good metal tones and you can get one way under 1000 USD I think. Used by Trivium, Bullet for my valentine, machine head. A ton of the greats. You can find them used for about $700. That marshall seriously is crap IMO. Oh and yes this Peavey is 60 watts but it's ALL TUBE so it's BASICALLY as loud as an 150 watt solid state. LOUD. You can always mike it though. I would really advise to stay away from that Marshall and wanna recommend Peavey or Randall amps for you man.
Peavey: Basically I agree with MickeM on this one, 6505 is a great hi gain amp for metal, and it has 6L6's inside which will ensure the tight and aggressive US kinda sound. and combo is just above your budget, so getting the 212 6505 combo would definitely solve all your issues, just gotta stretch a biiiit more for it. Here's the amp,it goes aroung 1199$:  Randall: If you want a high gain amp but with a bit of a British feel to it, check out the EL34 tube amp, Randal RH50 tube series. Head is costing just above 500$ bucks which leaves you space for a decent cab as well. Here's the head:

I meant that it's the 112 version that's due to be released in Q2 and it's going to cost around $800. I think 6550+ is basically very similar to that 5150 combo, only they had to call it like this now cause of some copyrights with EVH. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.
