Hi Roman!

This is place where I will give you assignments and upload videos. You will do the same starting tonight. Bookmark it, subscribe to it as it will be easier to follow when I post new things in!

Posted by: Pedja Simovic Sep 5 2009, 01:18 PM

Lets get started Roman!

In your guitar CV you mentioned theory and harmony as your main weakness.
We will today start from very beginning in theory and harmony.

Here is your 1st assignment!

Theory reading :

- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.

Time limit for 1st assignment would be a week from now! (13th of September).

Here are the links :

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=30271

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=30193

I would also like you to answers questions bellow :

1) What is scale? What defines it?
2) How do we create chords in Major scale (for example)? What interval is used to build chords?
3) How many notes does Major scale have?
4) How many modes does Major scale have?
5) Name all the modes in Major scale.
6) Name formula of Major scale using half steps and whole steps.
7) How many types of triads (3 note chords) we have in any major scale? Name them.

This should be enough to get us going!
You can send me answer to those questions via PM as I will give this small test to couple of guys here on MTP. I don't anybody to cheat and copy answers from each other!

Let me know if you have any questions Roman, I will be more than happy to help out!

Hey Pedja,

that seems to be a good starting point, because theory is one of my biggest weakness. I will read the posts and ask you questions if i need help.

cheers

Roman

Hey Pedja,

well let's start biggrin.gif

I read all two links and i want to start to answer your first excercise (Not the test it comes per PM).

QUOTE
Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.

3 part harmony: (i hope this makes sense biggrin.gif)

I: C major : C E G
II: D minor : D F A
III: E minor: E G B
IV: F major: F A C
V: G major: B G D
VI: A minor: A C E
VII: B diminished: B D F
VIII: C major: C E G

4 part harmony:

I: C major7: C E G B
II: D minor7 : D F A C
III: E minor7: E G B D
IV: F major: F A C E
V: G dominant7: B G D A
VI: A minor7: A C E G
VII: B minor7b5: B D F A
VIII: C major7: C E G B

Well i hope this is how you want it and correct. I know now that the 3 part build chord that have 3 notes in it. The steps between the notes are 1 - 3 -5 and on I IV V i can found the Major chords on the other degrees i found the minor chords except on the VII there i find a diminished chord.

At the 4 part i add another step, the 7. Here are on I and IV the major chrods II III VI the minor7. On V a dominant 7 chord and on VII i find the Minor7b5 .

I hope i understood it correctly. I am looking forward to your answer.

cheers Roman

Perfect Roman, you got it man!

Now you can look in the beginning of the thread and find extra questions I asked you to answer!

Posted by: edguy Sep 6 2009, 05:18 PM

That's cool:D

One quick question what is meant by minor7b5. I don't know what the b5 does.

b5 stands for interval of Diminished 5th. That interval is also known as TRITONE or Augmented 4th. I did lesson on it in my interval series. Check out complete interval series on the link http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=30317

Minor7b5 is basically Minor7th chord with lowered 5th of the chord wink.gif

Thanks for the answer. By the way you got a mail (PM) biggrin.gif

Posted by: Pedja Simovic Sep 6 2009, 05:57 PM

Got it all Roman. Will respond to it a bit later because I am recording alternate picking exercises right now. You will get more questions so hang around wink.gif

Roman, we are continuing with more theory assignments for you! Since you already read two links I provided, this shouldn't be too difficult for you.

- Read my theory and harmony posts from links provided bellow.
- Once you have read everything, write out cadences for following tonal centers
1) F Ionian
2) G# Dorian
3) C Phrygian
4) E Lydian
5) A Mixolydian
6) F# Aeolian

Hey Pedja,

i have a little question about cadences. Is there always the same (i call it formular) for building chord progressions. For example every Ionian mode have the 2 possibilities I IV V I or II V I?

If yes i think i could answer your assignment soon .

Hey Roman,

You are right! All the cadences from one major scale transmit to all the other keys. You guess it right for Ionian mode, now get working on other modes and post answers in this thread here!

Posted by: edguy Sep 11 2009, 11:59 AM

Hey Pedja,

here are my solutions. I hope i did it the right way biggrin.gif I am looking forward to your answer.

1) F Ionian

I IV V I: F Major, Bb Major, C Major, F Major
II V I : G minor, C Major, F Major

2) G# Dorian

I IV: A# minor, D# Major
I IImin: A# minor, C minor

3) C Phrygian

Imin bIImaj: E minor, F Major
Imin bVIImin: E minor, D minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: E minor, F Major, D minor, E minor

4) E Lydian

I II: A Major, B Major
I VII: A Major, G# minor
I II VII I: A Major, B Major, G# minor, A Major

5) A Mixolydian

I bVII: E Major, D Major
I Vmin: E Major, B minor

6) F# Aeolian

Imin IVmin Vmin Imin: D# minor, G# minor, A# minor, D# minor
Imin bVI bVII Imin: D# minor, B Major, C# Major, D# minor

Posted by: Pedja Simovic Sep 11 2009, 12:50 PM

Roman you did good for the first example only. For the rest you have to relate to original key and then based on that figure out how many sharps or flats that key has and write the cadence.

Where does G# Dorian come from? Dorian is what mode in Major scale?
Compare everything to C like I did in that post, it should help you to figure out keys!

Posted by: edguy Sep 11 2009, 05:43 PM

Hey Pedja,

here is my next try cool.gif laugh.gif I hope i got it now.

2) G# Dorian

I IV: G# minor, C# Major
I IImin: G# minor, A# minor

3) C Phrygian

Imin bIImaj: C minor, C# Major
Imin bVIImin: C minor, A# minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: C minor, C# Major, A# minor, C minor

4) E Lydian

I II: E Major, F# Major
I VII: E Major, D# minor
I II VII I: E Major, F# Major, D# minor, E Major

5) A Mixolydian

I bVII: A Major, G Major
I Vmin: A Major, E minor

6) F# Aeolian

Imin IVmin Vmin Imin: F# minor, B minor, C# minor, F# minor
Imin bVI bVII Imin: F# minor, D Major, E Major, F# minor

5) A Mixolydian

Imin IVmin Vmin Imin: F# minor, B minor, C# minor, F# minor
Imin bVI bVII Imin: F# minor, D Major, E Major, F# minor

Excellent work Roman. In bold you will find example that I will correct now.

C Phrygian is 3rd mode of what major scale ? Go down 2 whole steps and you will find an answer. C is our starting note, down a whole step has to be some sort of B (in this case its Bb!) and from Bb we go down another whole step (it has to be some sort of A) in this case Ab! So our key is Ab major.
If we have Ab major key, we can't have any sharps in that key. Also another trick to know if you did it right or not is to check your note names and never have 2 of the same with different symbols. For example, it is impossible to have in major scale both C and C# smile.gif We would rather have C and Db.
Hope that makes sense, let me know if you have any questions about it.

Posted by: edguy Sep 12 2009, 09:51 AM

Hey Pedja,

i think i read these rules somewhere but i forgot it to do it in this example. So what things are wrong now in my solution only C Phrygian if yes here is my correction:

Imin bIImaj: C minor, Db Major
Imin bVIImin: C minor, Bb minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: C minor, Db Major, Bb minor, C minor

Ps: did you had the time to make the GP tab for the intro i send to you? Thanks in adnvance

Excellent corrections Roman.
I did not get the chance to do that Guitar pro file yet. I hope to do it by Monday as I have collaboration planed and have to record 2 video lessons over weekend now. Will send it to you via PM as soon as I am done with it. Thanks Roman!

Hey Roman,

I am working currently on your Guitar pro transcription. I hope to put it here by tonight latest. I am also working on Jesse's sight reading bass performance and Frederik chord tone soloing take. Expect more detailed response from me tonight, until then be patient my friend smile.gif

Posted by: Pedja Simovic Sep 28 2009, 05:40 PM

Roman as I promised, here is Guitar pro and PDF of your transcription. Try to play it now. I didn't put fingerings as it is your riff but hopefully you realize that this riff is in odd time signature (6+4 not 5/4). Let me know if it works smile.gif

You welcome Roman smile.gif

Time signature changes, I tabbed it out based on rhythm pulse I heard from your phrases. Don't worry too much about that, the important thing is that you made something musical wink.gif

Roman, tell me everything you know regarding cycle 4 and 5?

Hey Pedja i will try to tell you everything i know about Cycle 4 and 5 now:

By the way i have some little pain in my mouth biggrin.gif

Cycle 5 is a tool for finding out how many sharps a key have. At first we start at the note C and go up a perfect 5th where we land on the the note G. So this is a key with one sharp. When i understand it correctly i can find out which note has the sharp by counting the 7th of G (in this example) so the 7th of G is F. Now i have to sharpen it and i got F#.

Cycle 4 find out all the flats of a key. The start is at C and i have to go up a perfect 4th. this is the next key with one flat. C up a perfect 4th (important is not to count the accidentals) leads me to F (one flat). to find out which note is the flat i have to go up anoter perfect 4th up from the root. so from F up an augmented 4th is B to get a perfect 4th we have to make B to Bb. And there it is our flat note Bb. The good thing about Cycle 4 is that when i found the first flat note it becomes the new key. So Bb is the next root note with 2 flats Bb and Eb. and so on..

I hope this is everything you wanted to read here biggrin.gif
