How many days would you consider are too many before you start losing whatever progress you did recently? how long have you been without practicing?

I feel that after 5 days or a week I start feeling a bit of a loss in my dexterity but then it comes back like riding a bike tongue.gif

I feel that I "got worse" quite fast, even 3-5 days without practice. This can be partially just my feeling, and the "lose in skill" applies mostly to the stuff I was recently learning and didn't learn it by heart before the "practice break".

I guess the longest without practice would be a week such as next week when I am at church camp. I did that last year too. When I come back, it's weird feeling, but also like getting back with a friend.

I'll be gone from GMC Monday - Friday for that camp week.

Well recently I went through some tough stuff, car accident, lost job, all this other crazy stuff and the overall mood I was in I just couldn't play or write, and I didn't for about a month and a half.

Couple weeks ago I started playing again, and honestly its some of my most inspired and best playing in a long while. Normally though every 2-3 weeks I will take a day or two break from it, to focus on mixes or something else besides physical playing. I usually come back feeling quite refreshed.

Lately, I haven't been able to stick to my practice routine because of the many things which happened in my life. Slowly but surely I'll get back on track though. Anyway I never had more than 3-4 days without playing smile.gif which is good for me.

I have found that I can tell a difference in my playing after about 3 days no practice time. I usually pick it back up again pretty quickly though, but for the first 30 min or so, its usually kinda sloppy. tongue.gif

Way too paranoid about losing skill. I practice daily, unless I'm injured or my hands are tired from the previous day.

I constantly want to be pushing those barriers.

There was time when I was 3-4 weeks without practice, but I was always playing. Never worried me tho, 1-2 days of focused practice returns me in full shape. smile.gif

PS Often these periods were beneficial in a way that my technique and tone got polished up.

Honestly, I feel I play better after taking a few days off. The mind is clear and my fingers are fresh.

I took a break of 6+ months. Took about 1-2 months to get back.

I was visualizing a lot (during daytime when I was away from the guitar), so that helped get back on track quickly.

Breaks are good. I recommend them. Maybe not as long as I took but 2 weeks to a month can do wonders.

I'd say I start to lose the extreme outer edge of right/left hand sync, speed/precision, after a week or so. The good news is, it comes right back after a bit of practice. smile.gif I had a really bad car wreck years back and nearly died, but during my recovery I was in the hospital for an entire month without a guitar. I thought I'd might forget my scales or something but thankfully it came right back once I got hold of a guitar again smile.gif

mm difficult question! I think that I haven't been more than 2 or 3 days without playing the guitar for more than 15 years... but I've been composing a lot... it means that I was playing the guitar but not practicing or studying...

I'm about the same.. I really don't like going longer than a week without playing but then when I get back to it I realise I didn't need to worry so much smile.gif

The worst is when you don't play because of things going on in your life.. taking a break is ok but not playing because you're never in the mood is the worst ! I hate it when that happens dry.gif

Haha, I just had the most awkward experience yesterday at the rehearsals for Mozart Rocks! I had to stop the orchestra and ask the leader to take the tempo a bit lower because I felt it was going a wee bit fast smile.gif that's because in the last 3-4 weeks I haven't been taking care of my chops as I should've tongue.gif

Wow! playing with an orchestra must be really cool =D For now i really don't see anything stopping me from not playing everyday, though i have to keep myself motivated everyday by watching videos of my favorite players or constantly listening to music whenever i have the chance =)

I think Dave Mustaine would have couple words about this topic:))
My idea is that every day we do not practise, we go back for one day. But after couple weeks later without practising we begin to loose the ability faster and faster. The good think is even though we dont play for weeks/months, it comes back quickly. I guess this is also part of a how our brain functions topic.

4-5 days in the hospital without the guitar was boring and almost enough to make me go crazy! I'm pretty impressed when I got to play it again thou, I thought it would take a while to get back into, but it I was jamming away again in no time! biggrin.gif
