I was inspired by Todd's Black Metal documentary thread. I wanted to get something with icy chords and blastbeats happening. It's bit of a change to the kind of thing you guys know me for..
The first 'riff' is basically centred around D Minor and alternates between G# (which is the Tritone, flat 5th etc) and D. It hits the G# and D a2 time before resolving from G# to A. That would essentially mean that it resolves from the flat 5th to the perfect 5th.
So this can give us mainly a minor sound. I would use D Minor, D Minor Pentatonic.. and just emphasise the G# (flat 5th) every now and then. Or try D Phrygian Dominant.. or even Harmonic Minor.. see what gives you an evil sound !
The next riff use Em to Fm with an open E root note as a pedal tone between the chords. The F would give us a minor 2nd suggesting modes like Phrygian, Phrygian Dominant.. but also try the normal E Minor scale too
I know it's a fast track but don't worry about your skills, I want this to be open to everyone.
Why not totally go against the grain and put some slow, bluesy licks over it ?!
It's an audio collab only so mp3's or wavs will do just fine !
Deadline is Wednesday 28th November !

Thanks man The drill analogy is really dead on!!! The right hand technique I'm using is very "Drill Like", mechanical/repetitive/forceful and gives that spiff aggressive sound. The pioneers in the genre have to be credited for creating these approaches that so many (including me) have stolen/borrowed.

Hey dude, just because the backing is typical fast BM, doesn't mean the licks have to be. I often choose to do a total contrast with what the backing is doing. If the backing is fast, go slower, hold some notes for ages.. a bit like what Chris Poland did in Megadeth on the super fast tracks.. he'd hold those high bends for ages and then play a little flurry of something.
Go for melody.. it's less of a headache and easier to get a better solo !!
I've heard what you can play so no excuses !!! Are you a NINJA or a NANCY BOY ??

Ain't really into black metal but thought I'd have a stab at this one. So corpse paint and studs on. http://soundcloud.com/llibach/blacker-full http://soundcloud.com/llibach/blacker-no-backing
This is what I meant when I said that the solo doesn't have to reflect the speed of the backing track. Just because the backing is fast, the solo doesn't have to be. In fact, a contrast is usually better to add melody to the extreme nature of the track ! Great work V !

Now your getting it!!!! It's Black Metal so the notes are actually less crucial than the overall "Vibe" of Dark/Heavy/Aggressive/Bit Nuts. So notes that are dissonant and out of key actually work better in many cases

Really great takes guys! I"m glad to see that this collar is gaining momentum!! Folks seem to be getting the idea that it really doesnt matter how fast or accurate you are in a solo like this as long as you convey some aggression/crazy/darkish vibe. Not to say the solos are not fast/accurate because they are! Just that there's no need to be intimidated by a backing/solo such this as. In fact, Black Metal solos are some of the most fun you can have since it's so no holds barred.
Great work guys!!

I remember telling everyone in Sat Vid Chat about this way spiff collab and then for a bit it didn't seem like folks were going to take the plunge. So it was snowing this morning when I looked out the window. I don't know if that was the reason, but somehow a very repetitive pattern appeared in my head on this last day for submitting a take for the Blacker than Black collab. So I'm doing a Dieter and posting my during morning coffee take.
Reminds me very much of a Mayhem song.. a riff in 'Buried by Time and Dust' I think.....
Very cool !!!

That's what staring at the snow does to you !! Makes you submit chilling lead lines to a black metal collaboration !! Nice work H ! I'm tempted to add some higher harmonies to part of that if I may ?

Hahhaaa you are too kind Bleez, Feel free to use it to scare your neighbors
I've kept everything rough and necro in the spirit of true black metal...
I'm surprised at 2 things:
1. How surprisingly listenable this is considering it's basically a 5 min long series of evil solos over a repeating riff !! 2. How many of you guys got involved.... it's great !
Hope you like it !

Slavenko - evil take ! The ultra noisy tone adds authenticity Love those descending hammer-ons too.. they give an atonal feel which helps create a dark and unsettling vibe. Dieter - Love the semi-tones at the beginning. It's like the 'Jaws' theme ! WeePee - Great intro to this solo - the tremelo picked 5th works so well. And that Friedman bend.. nice work !! Llibach - More good use of alternate picking single notes. A gret trick over these super fast backing. Another good thing is using it as a powerful 'entrance' before slightly changing gear in the second half and pacing the phrasing differently. Nice.. all because of a waterfall somewhere in Wales ! Bleez - What can I say about this excellent solo ? Those phrases make me think of a woman screaming and running away from spiders and the spiders just keep coming, crawling at a worryingly fast speed.... Genius ! Patrik - Brilliant pacing of the phrases and wicked use of harmonies.. just the kind of thing that works over this. And that whammy bar dive as the riff changes is just perfect !! Grace - Love this one too.. very creepy. Reminds me of an Egyptian tomb !! Also another great use of harmonies. Are we turning Grace into something evil ??? DeGroot - I swear you recorded this in a Norwegian graveyard !! Perfect ! Those chiming semi distorted chords are like demonic bells clanging at midnight ! Saddlefall - This is what it would sound like if Eddie Van Halen were born in Norway, not Holland ! Love it... very fiery with those taps, and bluesy bends. Is I said before, I like that bright tone, it just cuts through like a knife. A knife in the hands of an evil murderer. Gitarrero - I think you found the same graveyard as DeGroot ! Icy tremelo pickied arpeggios are the kind of thing BM is made of.. great work from the Teutonic Titan ! Hungry - This is like a load of evil imps dancing around a fire.. a jaunty and quirky take.. it works really well. It ascends up and up like someone slowly being driven mad !! Ninjastorm - Congrats on your first collab ! This is a well measured take with good timing. AFter the insanity of all the previous takes this brings a level of normality back to things with the bluesy unison bends ! Well... almost normal.. we wouldn't want full normal would we ?? Opetholic - Those tremelo picked notes appear again.. they're proving popular with you guys and for good reason - they work ! I like the way you take it up the neck with those sextuplets ascending in semitones. A very good, Kirk Hammett style trick ! Nice one AK Rich - And to close off the madness with perhaps the maddest take yet - The Alaskan evokes the air raid sirens of WWII and reigns down a Blitzkrieg of guitar death on our ears. A perfect end to a perfect collab !
Now, if you wonder where I am.. you'll find me at the local asylum in a padded cell !!
Seriously, though.... this was an unexpected thing. Wasn't expecting it to be this popular at all.. it turned out really fun. I think that's why it works, because we don't take it seriously so we can just go at it like a hammer !!
Great work guys, you did yourselves proud.. as always !

Too much sunshine in this country to inspire black metal tunes, you need the right kind of landscape and a pagan history to do it right I reckon.
