The "new phase" of MTP has now been running for a month and we are very excited about it. Chris Evans and I are in the process of evaluating this first month and think of improvements we can make to the program.

Also - we have found that quite a big portion of the mtp students do not have have an active subscription (GMC video lesson access). Al though we do grant forum access even for members whose GMC subscription has expired - we cannot do this for the mtp program - since instructors are expected to spend a lot of time with their mtp students.

So from next month (October) - you will not be able to get mtp mentoring without an active GMC subscription.

Although we would much rather be more "loose" with these rules - this is a mandatory step for us to be able to expand the mtp program.

As we are adding the necessary modifications to the server software to control this - we will apply the same rules to the collaborations board as well.

I fully understand this and I actually thought this was already implemented.

Totally support that. I'd feel like a thief taking part in such a high value feature as MTP without a video subscription.

I just came to think of one thing though. A suggestion, I geuss, regarding collaborations:

I think having only paying members be able to collaborate with instructor led collaborations is a good idea, however, once in a while a student led (whether paying or not) collaboration shows up. I know it's probably hard to do, but I geuss, if the student leader wants both paying members and non-paying members to join in, as it is in the first place led by a non-payed member etc. etc, is that possible? Like a... "free collaborations" forum.

Thank you for this update Kristofer. Since I have 17 MTP students I am hoping they are all fully subscribed to GMC. It would be such a waste to stop their progress after a month!

Hmmm... I fully understand why it is implemented when it comes to the MTP, but collaborations were always important part of the forum, and when people were granted "life access" to the forum, they surely thought that collaborations are part of this "privilege". Just to be clear, I have a paid 1 year subscription and don't plan to change that, just wanted to let You know that I am little worried.

Frankly, I am rather surprised this wasn't a condition to begin with given the enormous amount of time an instructor must devote to the program like you said. It isn't really in the MTP student's best interest to be an inactive subscriber anyway as the instructor would needlessly have to double up on information already available in the video lesson archive that could be directly related to the current study topic. All in all a rather unfair situation for all instructor's involved and I am glad to see that this is being remedied promptly. I think it is only fair for all parties involved. Besides, it could well be a good incentive for more to renew their subscription if they haven't already done so. I don't really understand why someone wouldn't be already though ...

This seems very reasonable since non subscribed students don't have access to video lessons which are main part of MTP (on which it relays). So if they have a task to learn a specific lesson they actually would not be able to access all the material needed (backings, tabs etc).

I agree with the MTP thing as it is worth a lot of money and takes a lot of time, however I dont think collabs should count in this.

That is all.

That means we can apply for new MTP openings? (Don't want to look like an opportunist but I just missed it because I didn't have a cam - now I have)

Cool. I think I read somewhere that the some of the automatic sensing features of the webcam drops the frame rate somewhat and are best disabled? Something which is not desirable for recording ourselves playing guitar as hard to see what the hands are doing in faster passages. Even so, I think will suit for purposes here well enough until I buy a proper video camera. I never bothered with all that till joining GMC! tongue.gif I could just take some time lapse photos on my DSLR maybe? wink.gif

Makes perfect sense, I wasn't even aware about this, but indeed it could be problematic if we request people to do lessons and they don't have full access which is important for both collabs and MTP.

I agree completely. For me, the collabs can be just as helpful as the lessons, therefore they have a value.

I agree with this policy entirely. This new MTP phase alone is well worth the price of subscription. You probably can't find correspondence lessons with any single instructor at this price, let alone a community of them. Also, in my opinion, lifetime forum access does not mean lifetime collab access. In fact, I assumed that only members with active subscriptions were able to upload files.

I think yesterday was my one year aniversary!

I think I am a fully paid up member but there is currently no way of checking.

I am unsure what happens about subscriptions? Are they automatically renewed each year? Or do I need to renew it myself?

I think GMC should provide a "My Account" link which holds such data for each member. Obviously this will need to be secure and also encrypted, probably on https.

For what it is worth I too think it right that non paying members should not be entitled to use MTP, REC or colalabs, otherwise what are we paying for?
