GMC Forum _ Instructors Corner _ Wich Codec Are You Using?

Posted by: Joe Kataldo Mar 7 2008, 11:11 AM

Hi Joe here, after the great thread about camera I'd like to talk a little about codecs, that I think makes the differences in quality more than camera itself.

I acquire in DV quality (I hope the best one) and I use Divx codecs set to 320 x 240 pixels, 900 kbps to export final video editing.

The video are very small from 5mb to 10mb and video quality doesn't seems to suffer.

What do you think? What do you use? Any suggestions?

Let's Discuss biggrin.gif

I use wmv different quality settings, depending on the video and it's nature. If it is a SVA I tend to use 93% quality VBR preset, on main 100%, and on slows 97%.

WOow What is a SVA?

I export file as Avi with Xvid codec.
Before that I used to export it as a Mov. with Sorenson codec
but it's much better this way,Avi with Xvid.

Is .avi with Divx the same as .avi with Xvid?

Thanks

Hmm,good one.
Not sure if that's same codec, tho it sounds pretty similar,Xvid and Divx...
Anyone?

Your video are really hi-quality I'll try Xvid codec

As far as I know DivX and Xvid are different codecs, both are good though. I guess my setup is the most primitive one in the moment, I just use my Logitech webcam and it records in wmv-files. No idea about compression settings, I am using the default ones but the result is pretty fine in my opinion.

Yes, XVid and DivX are definitely different, although I believe they have common roots and are variants of each other.

Xvid and Divx are different codecs, but they have the same container which is .avi file.

working now on AVi mpeg-4 with Divx codec for upcoming lessons

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 9 2008, 01:18 PM

I was working with avi before wmv, and got some bad results. I think maybe (at least here) wmv is better codec to work, but it's all down to personal prefference really smile.gif

try Riva flv encoding its work good also

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 9 2008, 11:34 PM

I'll try man, thanks smile.gif

I use Flash Video Encoder with following settings:
Video: On2 VP6 codec at 900 kbps
Audio: mp3 (128 kbps) stereo

So far the best one for me smile.gif

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 10 2008, 12:09 AM

Must try that Dejan and Hisham thanks. I use wmv, but in 3 previous lessons had some small artifacts.

OMG when I format my PC i lost my configuration !! sad.gif I'm having lot of problems to edit my videos... I canot find a good config with the premier, I don't know why but all the original settings are horrible sad.gif

I try to install Vegas now, I surrender to Premiere

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 27 2008, 08:17 PM

i use Vegas too, each has its own advantages and faults. Vegas is somehow more easier to work with imo.
Good luck man smile.gif

Yeah use vegas man its much easier and you get pretty same results wink.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Mar 28 2008, 01:50 AM

and what settings are you using ?? I have been trying it this evening and my demo file (4 minutes) was more than 1GB !!! laugh.gif that's too much for me tongue.gif

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Mar 28 2008, 12:00 PM

Which version of Vegas are you guys actually using? The regular or pro version? I have Adobe Premiere Elements and it seems ok, but I wonder if Vegas is better ...

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 28 2008, 01:13 PM

I use Vegas 7.0 and use wmv codec, with a VBR video quality of 97% (whatever that means :unsure). Anyway the file should be around 15MB all in all.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Mar 28 2008, 01:54 PM

mmm I have the Vegas 6... mmm I'm gonna see if I have this codec wink.gif
Ah, how do you put the text in Vegas ?? In premiere it was so easy but I have lot of problems with it because it adds automaticaly a black square around my video sad.gif

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Mar 28 2008, 01:58 PM

You put text by clicking the right mouse button on the video track and choose "add text media". Then you can click on the text event (which becomes an event like any other video), and it will open a window with all kinda of options for text editing, shadows etc..

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Mar 28 2008, 02:18 PM

yeah, I find this option in the menu and now how can I put in with a transparent background ??

Posted by: Joe Kataldo Apr 6 2008, 11:12 AM

What about using FLV codecs the one used by the ICP?

You can go to generate media > text > and choose the type with transparent background..You can drag and drop in the timeframe from there..Just make sure you place it in a track that is above your video track..

Sorry for going slightly offtopic, but does anyone use Ulead Studio?
It came with the new camera and judging from the first few experiments i've done i think it's great.. and i estimate it will save me a few hours from the usual VirtualDub editing procedure.

Is Ulead any good? or should i try to get a version of Vegas while i'm first at it?
I'm still quite new to videoediting-software.

Well I think it is good enough! You don't need actually any special features...VirtualDub is cool but a little hard to use..If you can make everything easily in Ulead there is no need to go for Vegas..

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Apr 9 2008, 10:16 PM

I would recommend Vegas. Virtual Dub is cool but it is for linear editing I think. In vegas yo can layout several tracks at once - so it's unlinear editing, and Vegas is very easy to work with.

None uses FLV codecs?

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 16 2008, 04:38 PM

What do you mean? You can save it in any kind of format I guess...

Posted by: Joe Kataldo Apr 16 2008, 06:27 PM

the same codecs ico uses, so he doesn't have to compress it again
