Yeah, it is amazing smile.gif Well he got perfect pitch as well as relative, and insane amount of practice, nothing inhuman abilities and so called "born with talent", so go and practice! laugh.gif and i think that Satriani can do something similar.

p.s.- for ear training i strongly recomend David Lucas Burge courses, i only got started with them (5 days ago) and already got good results! (before i couldn`t even recognize open strings and notes pitches biggrin.gif)

I think that is very strange, it shows how our brain is highly sofisticated, but also it's a give&take thing - it has it's limits, as we see in this case. Derek is retarded on one side, but has this amazing sound processing ability one the other side, almost resembling to a machine-like process of differentiating sound wave frequencies. I am sorry about this fellow, cause he cannot live a normal life, and has to go through these tortures. I hope some day people will invent cures for these issues. Unfortunately it is very hard to do that with the brain it is far too complex for present technology.

I really wonder how he would respond if you asked him to discern the difference between tone. Like the use of distortion with a guitar... like trying to emulate the musical idea of distortion through his playing..

or maybe even if you played the same note on two different parts of a guitar (i.e. different strings) and ask him to tell you what the difference was in the two notes.

very interesting stuff

I watched a documentary about this guy on the Discovery channel, very incredible skill but also limitations.

It was interesting what he could and could not do...for instance they asked him to play a piece happy...he played it happy..they asked him to play it sad...he played it sad. They then asked him to play it angry, and he played it happy....like the idea of angry playing is not part of the equation.

What i find really interesting though is the fact that he does in fact put his own spin on things he has heard. Most savants that are musical play things note for note the way they heard it...and are incapable of doing it otherwise.

He doesnt seem to have that limitation, like in that clip she asked him to play Fur Elise like Mozart would have, and he could. A normal musical savant wouldnt know the difference.

As far as perfect pitch goes, i think almost all musicians have a certain type of pitch perfection, just depends on how it manifests. For myself for example, i do not have "Pefect pitch" per the definition, like if someone told me to sing middle C without having heard it i could not do it. But at the same time i have the ability to distingish variations of a note less than a quarter tone, for example if you played F..and F# i could sing and hear inbetween the two. In some respects though it is a curse, there are certain artists i cannot stand listening to because they are always sharp or flat to my ear.

Very good point Daniel.

I don't have perfect pitch per definition either, but I can instantly hear if my guitar get just a little bit out of tune (cause I know how it should be exactly on tune). So people are still liking it and it comes "as curse" because I just want to stop playing it and retune it tongue.gif

Yah, i have that same problem because of it. The most annoying thing to me is that my guitar is not top end, and when i play with along with a Keyboard and all the tone variations between my guitar..and actual because of intonation really grates on my nerves sometimes.
