Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Maiden Made Easy by Ben Higgins

Going to basics, want to tighten my rhythm playing. One bum note on the high E, but felt pretty good otherwise.

Cool - I think this is a strategic choice of lesson for you: It is very straight forward rhythm wise and it's a good opportunity to focus on the pulse - which is what I commented on last time.

I would encourage you to keep doing this until you have developed a super steady foot tap. Even though this one does not have any difficult transitions - we can still slightly hear the same problem as earlier at 00:41 - right after that single note passage.

Other this, your tone would benefit from a more relaxed right hand with slightly larger strumming movements.

Over all this take offers a good listening experience with that little gaffe excepted - and your faster downpicking feels pretty tight. Well done - you get an 8 from me!

Hi IceThrone!!

Nice guitar man. biggrin.gif

This lesson is a very good choice to tighten your metal rhythm technique. The overall sound is very close here. You can play everything with the right timing which is not a small thing.

The next elements to improve here are hands relaxation and palm muting sound. I can notice that your hands are still not comfortable playing this stuff, both hands look tense, and that's reflected in your groove and dynamics. I recommend you to watch your right hand movement and compare it with Ben's. Check how his up and down movement goes more relaxed from his wrist, and how this affects groove.

In a similar way, it seems that you are pressing frets very hard when playing those power chords. Try to use less strength for this, and your hand will also feel smoother and more relaxed.

The galloping section is lacking palm muting. Maybe you can complement this lesson one with any gallop workout:

The melodic section sound good, you can only improve a bit your vibrato technique. I recommend you this lesson for the near future:

Even with all these comments and things to improve, I think that this is a good take mate. I'll give you a 7!

Keep on the hard work.

Super congrats on completing this REC. Its a very cool tune with a great maiden vibe. As such it requires a pretty good grasp of triplets and muting as maiden love muted triplets otherwise known as a "gallop". Getting this technique down is key to being able to play Metal in general IMHO. It's used far and wide.

Your palm mute could be a pinch firmer which would give the tone a more metallic vibe which can always help when playing metals. You don't let your mute hand drift around which is good, just maybe a pinch more mute pressure is all.

Your single note/scale work is good. Also critical to playing this style and most styles of metal that have scale breaks. I would say work a bit on your vibrato in terms of depth. Good vibrato starts almost still and then gets wider over time. Even

Well played on this one 8 from me!

Hey there!

Let me start from from things that took my attention first. The way you use your ring finger to make a bar for powerchords may not be a best choice. I don't think it's comfortable and it brings a risk of fretting unwanted notes on a strings below. At some spots I can feel that the third note of powerchord is not audiable.

I think that your tone (meaning both - right hand execution and toen setup) is descent. There is proper amount of attack and it's overall tight and crunchy.

In the melody line (around 1 minute) you forgot to add vibrato on the notes played on e1 string (notice that Ben uses different vibrato direction for these notes). You vibrato on the long notes is also overdone. Agressive vibrato is cool but when you cross the "tasty point" it starts to sound silly smile.gif
