Guitar Practice: Forwards And Backwards Options

You know you get the feeling sometimes that you might make some progress but you also feel like you sometimes take steps backwards ??

Here's a great quote by Bruce Lee:

"One rarely reaches the goal in one step - The control of our being is not unlike the combination of a safe. One turn of the knob rarely unlocks the safe. Each advance and retreat is a step towards one's goal."

The steps have to be taken, regardless of the direction and until you take them, they're waiting and waiting for you.. So even when you feel like you're taking backward steps, you're still taking the steps that will ultimately lead to success

Yes, that can be a pain in the butt.. although it's always good to remember Kris Dahl's approach which was about how to use your limitations as your inspiration. In certain areas where you may be lacking, you can actually cobble together a different approach using a combo of different techniques or a slightly modified version of a technique.

I think having these obstacles are a great opportunity to discover a different approach that is then unique to us only !

My picking technique isn't the best. Not as smooth, clean or relaxed as it could be.. maybe I didn't spend enough time playing slow or medium speed. But either way, I have certain licks that have a weird picking approach and they are unique to me so I'm grateful for my differences and I'm actually exploring them even more. So the more I dig down into what I've got I find myself going further away from the conventional norm. It's more exciting !

This is the main reason why we use to lose motivation... these backwards steps can be very frustrating, and that's when we have to be intelligent and keep going, and remember those things that keeps up motivated and moving. Nice quote Ben.
