After viewing this video, I wasn't sure how Guitar Rising's notation works, so I asked GameTank. Here's the deal, according to CEO Jake Parks:

Guitar Rising has six rows which notes travel down; the six rows represent the six strings on your guitar. Inside each note is a number that tells you which guitar fret to press. For example, if a note is traveling down the top row with the number "2" inside it, this cues you to play your top guitar string with the second fret pressed down. This is in essence guitar tablature notation that moves across the screen.

But if it only uses the first 5 frets, it doesnt teach you much, Just how to use those 5 frets. And thats not too useful. Anyone know if they plan to use all 22-24 frets or whatever?

It uses all the frets on guitar. The numbers come up in the bubble that you're about to play to denote the fret to do. I think this is great as it is a way to practice songs and hhopefully a good critical evaluation on how you played the song at the end so you know if you need to improve.

Surely that is a good thing?

If it does in fact use ALL frets, then i see some merit for beginners in learning songs. for some reason, i cant find a use for this for me though sad.gif

Seriously!? this looks really stupid. better to spend your time actually practicing the instrument. this ranks up there with the robot guitar and the robot auto tuner. cmon people.

No, its practicing the instrument with the help of a crappy computer program. in my opinion this is as bad as "Guitar hero", its just a gimmick. its like a guitar that lights up and shows you where to play. i think tiger electronics makes one of those actually. a metronome and my own creativity are all i need.

This looks promising, but let's see the final result. It seems that it is more or less trying to cope with 2 audiences: guitar hero players and real guitar players... Well, if it is like that I will wait for something for the second audience.

Anyway, I think that in near future you will be loading a guitar pro 8 file along with mp3 and will be doing serious practicing along that, and you will get information of what mistakens you are doing. Also, when you compose a lick, the program will automatically tab it for you...

I think it looks sweet.....except one BIG thing. It looks hard to see what fret you have to press. Honestly, I think its setup is really stupid. The potential is there though.

I would have the whole neck on the screen. Why do you have to have those stupid moving frets?
At least this way you'll be able to catch on easier, and have something to reference against without trying to pay attention what fret #'s are zipping past the screen, and not proper technique.

I feel too many products are out there to get someone playing too fast before they are actually ready. If they fixed things up bit on the layout, could be sweet for novice players.

If someone needs a video game to motivate him to practice and beat levels, I guess he won't get too far with his instrument anyway.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll probably won't ever use that software, but it seems like an interesting idea nevertheless.

I think it's good for those kids who cant leave a console / computer. . They actually leave with real guitar skills in this one compared to Guitar Hero
