Hey guys,

For a few days now I feel, not really pain, it doesn't hurt, but "something" I can't really describe, at the base joints of my ring finger (metacarpo-phalangeal joint). I feel that only when I am doing some bending, vibrato.

So, I should probably stop playing for a few days but that's really going to be baaaaad for my mood. What do you think ? Does it hurt when you are getting really injured ?

But my other question is more here, when you play the guitar, is your hand perfectly parallel to the fretboard ? Or a little bit rotated so the left of the palm is nearer and the right farther ?

When I play with my hand completely parallel, I don't "feel" my ring finger joint anymore but it's pretty hard to do bending or vibrato in that position. So I'd like to know what's the best position.

Thanks a lot for your answers,

As far as hand positioning, the more you play the more you kind of find what works best. Watch vidoes...most important is you don't want to strain.

I use to try and play with my fretting hand in a position similar to Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn all the time. I strained the hell out my wrist and hand because it's just not natural for my hand size, shape, whatever. Plus, I like to play speedy , three note per string stuff and that doesn't work. You're hand will kind of fall into what feels natural.

I sprained my ring finger a few times years ago. It sounds like you might have done that bending or practicing vibrato. Whatever the case, rest i t for a couple days and go from there. Start back up slowly and listen to what your finger is telling you. If it still hurts bad after a week or two, see the doctor.

Don't freak out, it sounds like a strained finger. It sucks not being able to play for a couple days... better than injuring it more and not playing for months.

It's normal to sometimes feel the pain or at least some acquard feeling, this is often because we overdo with something. It wouldn't be normal to keep pushing it at the same pace tho, as this is usually the sign to take it easy for couple of days. Just do some simple stuff, chords, simple melodies, write songs, and it will be OK.

I also think you should give that finger a break and practice something different for a couple of days, so the pain can go away again. If you are in pain you should always take this as a warning, your body is showing you that you are overdoing something or doing soemthing in an improper way.

Thanks all for your answers, luckily I hadn't much time to play guitar those last days but I am probably going to start again this week-end. I think I will start with a full cleaning of my guitar so I won't strain my finger. smile.gif

And yes, lately, I practiced a lot my vibrato and bending. That's probably the reason why my joint hurts.

About my left hand, I am still trying to find the best position so it doesn't strain and does feel comfortable. Not sure if I am doing something in an improper way though. Perhaps I will record a video with a close zoom on the fretboard so you can check that.
