This is very practical...Also there are tuners for dropping to D for bass..Don't know if they make them for guitars...I guess its impossible to tune by hand without anyone noticing and precisely in the middle of playing the song..

Well, you're dropping the E string two steps. If the rest of your guitar is in tune, you can just hold the E string at the 2nd fret and then tune that down to E. That should put the open string at D.

I think there's a beginner-ish drop-D lesson on GMC somewhere. If I remember right, he just tuned it down by ear. Plucking the E and A strings while tuning E down til it sounds right. It's easier to get a feel for how it's supposed to sound if you give it a reference point.

Yeah this is good. Or also, for E standard tuning the low E string on the 5th fret should sound like the A string played open. For drop D though the 7th fret on the E string should sound like open A.

Its quite simple and you can get it done in 10 seconds, if you practice it a bit:-D You just have to drop low E string whole step - so you hold 7th fret, and downtune, until 7th fret on low E is an A note - just like 2nd string. You got, what i mean? Normally, A is on 5th fret (on E) and you have to downtune it, so A is on 7th fret:)

Its really simple and doesnt take you more than few seconds:) You can switch like that between songs without anyone noticing. It just looks, like you are trying to improvise:-D

Dont be afraid, DROPS ROCKS;)
