Neoclassical metal has recieved many descriptions over the years since it's introduction. Neoclassical Metal is, in essence, a style of music that can be described as the combination of Classical and Metal style music. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, the Metal genre began to witness the incorporation of Classical influences into the genre by artists such as Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, Uli Jon Roth, and Randy Rhoads. Yngwie Johann Malmsteen, however, can be titled as the form's best-known artist, with his history of Classical training and Shred style playing creating a unique and amazing licks. The growth of Neoclassical metal is very closely related to the Shred movement, a style of guitar that incorporates lightning fast playing, due to the fact that it many guitarists within this movement had a great deal of inspiration from the amazing Violin solos of Niccolo Paganini.

Characteristics of Neoclassical Metal:

Neoclassical metal retains many traits of the traditional metal genre. A few noteable traits are:
~Pedal point - the repetition of a note or group with a scalar/melodic line
~Ostinato - the strict repetiton of a single phrase or idea
~Stylized ascending or descending through a scale or mode
~Fast Arpeggios
~Strong vibratos

When dealing with the composition of Neoclassical songs, licks, and riffs, instruments such as the Piano, Harpsichord, Violin, and misc. Orchestra sounds are commonly found in the backing of the song, providing melodies or harmonies which the guitarist plays to. The inclusion of pieces of famous classical pieces may also be found within the song or lick itself, giving the music a classical traditionality while still maintaining the modern style of the Metal genre.

Scale/Mode Selection:
The Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, and Natural Minor scales are probably the most used scales in the Neoclassical Metal genre. Of course, this can vary between guitarists. The Phrygian mode is also a common site in Neoclassical Metal licks.

Most prominent soloists of Neoclassical Metal:
~ Jason Becker
~ Marty Friedman
~ Randy Rhoads
~ Michael Angel Batio
~ Uli Jon Roth
~ Luca Turilli
~ Yngwie Malmsteen
~ Michael Romeo

Classical Pieces with notable elements:
~ Paganini's Caprice No. 24
~ Beethoven's Symphony No. 9
~ Bach's Fugue in D Minor
~ Vivaldi's Four Seasons
