I am purchasing new strings tomorrow and plan to restring my strat. This guitar has vintage keys. I have read Ivan's restringing tutorial (a great help) and scoured the net for suggestions. I have one simple question. Ivan suggested taking all the strings off of the guitar at one time to allow for a thorough cleaning. I have also read and been told by friends to take one string off at a time to prevent the neck from bending slightly. What is the better way to do this? I do want to clean the fretboard.

On another note, do you all loosen your strings when you put your guitar on a plane?

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad my tutorial helped you man.

Regarding taking off all the strings, you shouldn't be worried about that. I take off all the strings and thoroughly clean my fretboard on my strat and peavey guitar every time and never had any problems whatsoever. The neck needs to adjust to tension naturally after you put new set of strings, but this happens quite fast - overnight.

Well if you want to clean it than take off all the strings..If you replace strings with the same gauge neck will return after some time to original position..

I would suggest loosening the strings when traveling by a plane and carrying guitar in a hardshell case!

Thanks guys.

Ivan, I have especially enjoyed your lessons. You obviously put a lot of time into them and your contributions are really a valuable part of this website. Great job.

I will be heading out of Europe and back to the states as my assignment here is complete. I have really enjoyed everyone from this end of the globe. I feel like you are all my neighbors since you seem to frequent the site at the same time as me.

Changing strings one by one is a great idea if you have a floating bridge, if not I use to remove all strings, clean the freatboard and then put the new strings, is better and don't worry about this tension.

See U !!

About traveling, when we are touring my strings are not loosened when we fly, and I never had any problems. This loosening thing comes from a time when the luggage compartments of planes could get VERY cold, therefor the tension of the strings got much higher and the neck could break. But as I said, I never do this since the luggage compartments don't get that cold anymore. If you want to make sure you can of course still loosen your strings, but as I said, in all my years of touring around the world I never had any problems.

Agree,in todays world there is no real need to loose strings when flying,
well maybe you should loose it if you're traveling from or to Antarctica or som. smile.gif

Hey, thanks Guys, much appreciated. When I flew to Tenerife in December, I left the strings as is and did not have a problem. Then i was told to loosen so i was double checking. I appreciated your answers and experience....thanks.

The restringing in complete and I think all is well. I purchased some new Ernie Balls and I am pleased. It is amazing to me how much tighter the strings feel after restringing. Not sure if it is the different type of strings (Ernie Balls regular slinky versus the fender strings that came with the guitar, super 250R) or the strings just loosened a lot with time through playing.

I was so worried that the machine heads would look horrible after replacing the strings, but everything looks really nice and tidy.

Thnaks to everyone who chimed in. You all are most helpful.

By the way, I wimped out and replaced them one at a time. I was to nervous to take all the strings off at once. Probably stupid......maybe next time.

Marcus, when your gear flies, it is commercial jets or is it chartered special for the bands. What I am getting at, is, are your instruments handled by the airlines people or your own people, or you?

It's great to hear that restringing process has gone well, and well done mate. Wish you a lot more successful restringings in the future as well smile.gif

And you are right, strings are tighter when they are new. They get loose from playing and tension over time, and this among other things is the reason why they get that bad sound and detune so much.

I hope Marcus will forgive me for taking this one. smile.gif

I guess you ask this because of damage during transport?
If you send your guitar to luggage it's usually "handled"
by airport stuff so it's wise to put it in flight case,
they use to throw things soooo easily ohmy.gif
But if you're carrying only one guitar then it's nice to
take it on the plane with you as a personal luggage,
that's what I do all the time. smile.gif

Thanks guys, I so do not want to put it in with the luggage. I have always been able to put it in the overhead bins and that works. Nervous, nervous, nervous.

One final request for help.....I hope. After restringing, i have notice a slight fret buzz on my A and D strings which I had never had before. It is a fender strat.. Any suggestions to get rid of this?

Thanks in advance as always.

Depends of what kind of buzz you're getting.
Be sure that new strings always tend to buzz a bit
cause they are shining and new but that buzz
cannot be heard when you plug guitar into an amp,
you can hear it only when you play unplugged.
So do not worry if that is the "buzz" you hear.

And if it's more serious buzz then you could put a tinny
pieces of paper in the nut, bellow A and D,
that would release them a bit from fingerboard and
remove some buzz as well. smile.gif

Hi Muris, I just plugged in and indeed it does not seem to be coming through the amp. I was hearing it when I was just playing unplugged. So i guess I will just keep an eye on it and see how things settle. As always, than you kindly

Some string buzz is perfectly normal when you put new strings mate, don't worry.

As long as you don't have any buzzing or loss of sustain on the amp, then you're OK.

Thanks Ivan, as far as I can tell, I do not have those issues.

So does the buzz go away and why is it there at the start?

It will go away as the strings wear off a bit and go dull. Also it will go away when the neck is settled, in 1-3 days. But as I said, don't worry about it - if you don't have buzz or loss of sustain on the amp you should be fine smile.gif

When we are touring we of course can't take all of our backline as handluggage, so we have to check it in normally, and as Muris said, BE SURE you have a proper case, a flight case would be the best, because the airport crews that handle the luggage don't really seem to care much about breakable things... I have seen my rack been thrown to the ground already, same with other cases, and it made me feel like jumping right out of the planes window to kill that guy, but well, since all my stuff is in very good cases nothing ever got damaged. The problem is though that a good flightcase is pretty heavy, so you can easily reach your wight limit like that, but I definitely prefer to pay overweight if I can be sure that my guitars survive the trip.

Once again thanks everyone for sharing your experience. It has always been very helpful to me.

On another note, if you need a laugh, picture this.

You know the people in the airport that everyone points their fingers at and says, ohhh, glad we are not them. That will be me next week as I prepare to depart Europe. My family has been here for a year and we head back next week. Assignment complete.

As we roll through the airport, my wife and I will have, in no particular order, 2 dogs, our two year old daughter (with her car seat and stroller), my guitar, golf clubs, computer bags, a backpack, and three pieces of luggage. So if your day is not going great, think of me and have a little laugh. I hope we make it.

I will be sad to leave this part of the world since I feel that being online in this timezone puts me in touch with many people who would are active at different times than I will frequent the site in the future. I am curious to see if the site feels different. Hopefully I will be able to maintain my internet europe friends while at the same time, become more familiar with people who use the site in the US timeframe. You all are great and keep up the fantasic work.

See you on the other end of pond.
