The Swirl Guitar Project Begins!

I have two used Ibanez guitar bodies that are both black, and I am going to try a multi colored blue theme on them. From everything I have read, this is a lot harder than it looks so I am starting off by test dipping some pieces of painted wood and cardboard before I actually make a run at the guitar bodies. Here is what you need to get together for this project: 1. A large plastic bin. It needs to have a large surface area as well as be deep enough to completely submerge a guitar body straight down. The surface area is important because the paint will be drawn to the body as you put it down into the water. If it is too narrow, there will not be enough paint on the surface to cover the body. You will see what I mean later... 2. Enamel paints. Everyone states Humbrol brand are the best to use so I ordered some over the internet. 3. Borax. Here in the States, we have 20 Mule Team Borax...UK guys can find Boots Own Borax. It is sold in supermarkets in the laundry section. This is needed to break the surface tension of the water. If you have very soft water, you may not need to use it. 4. Water. Duh! I started off with a small plastic cup of water, to check if it was soft enough to not need Borax. I put small drops of paint into the water using a toothpick. It spread quite nicely, but not enough to skip the Borax. I dipped a small piece of cardboard and it came out pretty good! I then filled a plastic container to try on a couple of pieces of wood that I spray painted dark blue. I mixed in some Borax, just estimating at this point. I used 1 oz. of Borax for 1 gallon of water approximately. I don't know if I am supposed to let it sit for awhile or not, but I let it sit for about 5 minutes...probably not long enough! I put the paint into the water, and it started to spread nicely. There were droplets that started to sink, then came back to the surface and spread from there. I don't think this is supposed to happen so I must experiment and try to figure out why it did. I put the red in and started to swirl it with a screwdriver. The blue paint started to dry WAY too quickly! It started to "skin" up almost immediately. Not sure if this was attributed to improper Borax / water ratio, or maybe improper water temperature. I have read if the water is too hot, it will dry to quickly. If anything, my water was a little on the cool side. It is supposed to be room temperature. I dipped the board, and overall it came out not too bad for a first time. I did learn that with a dark background I need some more light colors, or at least figure out why the blue started drying so fast. I will keep going, and keep you guys posted on my progress! The water/paint ration seems to be a bit off for me - in the video link I did not see any transparency of the water. Here I tried a larger bin of water and got it to about 70 degrees F. I put in about 1 oz. of Borax for 1 gallon of water. I also tried something different...I spray painted the wood white, then light blue to see if that made for a better background to dip onto. I poured in the paint one color at a time. The black spread evenly, just like you see in the videos. The blues continue to give me problems. The light blue immediately sunk to the bottom in one big blob, never separating at all. The darker blue spread fairly well, but some of it still sunk. The red spread out well also. None of the colors skinned over too quickly this time. I was not at all happy with the result when I dipped however. It doesn't look swirled at all, it just looks messy. I still need to experiment with water temperature and Borax levels. This time, I raised the temperature to 78 degrees and tried it with no Borax at all. I tried black and blue on a white painted piece of wood. The paint didn't spread very well at first, so I added 1 oz. of Borax. Slowly, the paint started to spread like it appears in the videos on youtube! I dipped the piece of wood and it came out very nice! It was the best swirl so far. I think that the paint slowly increased in temperature and started to spread as a result. I think next time I am going to try warming up the paint cans under hot water before I pour them into the water.
