If I have the time, I try to help my students when they want to buy a new guitar. There is a store I frequently go to buy strings for myself, good people and pays attention to customers. After a while they started to offer slightly better pricing for my student too and of course I don't have any financial benefit from this.

Anyway I'm keeping the story short; we ordered some epiphone Les Paul plus top to test. Keep in mind I'm not a LP guy but did play few epi and Gibson's...

I tested the 2 available (same model) guitars and was shocked by the differences in sound. Even the students girll friend who didn't play guitar noticed. One was very vintage sounding while the other was some-what like an fat but middy fender tongue.gif

The vintage sounding one wasn't the color the student wanted but the flametop, neck wood visually was superior to the others. Besides the sound, it felt great too. I played a few Epi LP's too before that and almost hated them, this one was obviously special.

I broke my rule and told my student not to think about color, he liked the sunburst (who doesn't? smile.gif ) while the "one" was honeyburst which to me is a fine color too...

So yesterday reminded me that even in the affordable guitar catagory there are some treasures. Gibson users are very used to this kind of searching but I did find treasure Fender's too at the time.
