I took a bit of a break from GMC, for a few different reasons. For one, I was developing a condition in my right elbow, most likely cubital tunnel syndrome. Can't say for sure because I diagnosed myself. Basically, I lost so much strength in my wrist, that I couldn't even turn the ignition on the car. Therefore, a break from playing was in order, as I'm certain that's what was causing it. The second reason for the break was just because of time - I'm in engineering school, and anybody that has studied engineering can tell you, it leaves you with very little free time.

During my time off, I analyzed what I was doing wrong, and realized a few things. I was using too much tension while picking, especially while practicing tremolo picking. I was also keeping my elbow bent for long stretches of time, not only while playing guitar, but also while at the computer, writing, or even sleeping. So I started practicing picking with as little effort as possible, and taking more and longer breaks. This, combined with the two months where I didn't even touch the guitar, has helped tremendously.

Unfortunately, it is starting to comeback, but not that bad. I started getting lax with the guidelines I set out for myself, and now I'm paying the price. This really just goes to show that preventing injury is something that must always be on your mind. You may think your issue has went away, but it hasn't.

Anyhow, glad to be back amongst friends biggrin.gif

Good to have you back, Senor 'Bone !

Those arm conditions are so annoying. I've been there too.. just gotta lay off as you've done and try to avoid other situations when the arm is bent for long periods. Sleeping with a bent elbow is one such thing which can bring it on.

Hope to be hearing and seeing some more of that famous NC humour ! cool.gif

Thanks Ben biggrin.gif The most annoying part is staying away from the computer, in this day and age we suffer from serious Internet addiction sad.gif

Welcome back! Very glad to hear you are working to play with less tension. It's something that the body does not want to due typically. The natural thing to do, often, is to tense up, especially when playing fast. It's important to FIGHT THIS LIKE CRAZY smile.gif So your on the right track!!!!!

I'm really starting to think that excessive tension is what prevents guitarists from progressing. I always go back to what you say in your weekly lessons - play with less tension. That is the real trick biggrin.gif

Yeah, the most annoying part for me is needing to use the 'puter when it's the one thing that aggravates it the most ><
