GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Next Gmc Competition...

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Aug 13 2009, 02:18 PM

Let's brainstorm! cool.gif

Posted by: muntahunta Aug 13 2009, 02:22 PM

maybe a songwriting competition, the song has to be complete with backing track.
except this one has a twist... you must include riffs/solos from 1 lesson at GMC.

youd have to select the lesson and then write a song around the solos and riffs provided.
winner gets decided by vote?

Wiki Writers Competition Round II

The first one encouraged a lot of people to write high quality articles and it filled the wiki with more than 100 articles in juat a few months!

hmm songwriting...I am not so sure - you might win that one! laugh.gif

No seriously that's a cool idea - the only problem I see is that we might not get that many participants (at least if we compare with "non-playing" competitions)

Well, same answer to you Zakk!! tongue.gif

No seriously (once again) - this is something I have been thinking about for quite a while - it would cool to throw in some great prizes and launch a new wiki competition!
edit - do we have any more suggestions about the details of a new wiki competition, what would we want to see?

Posted by: muntahunta Aug 13 2009, 02:34 PM

haha smile.gif
ok heres another suggestion that may be of interest...

An Advertising Competition

Make an advert for GMC using either a jingle or a poster or a flash presentation or a video or any other media.
This advert could not only win you a cool prize but it would benefit GMC too, maybe being used to advertise the website in some way smile.gif
obviously there should be guidelines and rules but all that is the fineprint tongue.gif

EDIT---
Just to clarify a jingle would be like an advert you heard on the radio or a television

I'm all for a new Wiki competition! (Obviously laugh.gif, I wouldn't take part but organize it this time!)

We can make a section for it where we keep a regularly updated scoreboard, links to the entries & marks they get, competition guidelines etc. smile.gif

On top of that there are several http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=27205 going on such as the guitarist & genres lists, needed entries, as well as many different portals going on that should inspire participants to pick and create new entries. cool.gif

Plus a lot of new & old GMCers would get an extra motivation to finally jump in the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=19336!

Wiki! Wiki! Wiki! smile.gif

How bout a new T-shirt design contest? Or, maybe a GMC banner contest for the future layout?

Posted by: Gus Aug 13 2009, 03:29 PM

As far as I understand, most of the competitions are about 1 of these 2 things or both:

1) Making GMCers to practice and become better guitarists
2) Promote a features of the site

So what about a REC program competition?? wink.gif
That should make people practice GMC lessons like crazy tongue.gif

Posted by: jafomatic Aug 13 2009, 03:31 PM

Feels like the last one featured songwriting and arrangement so the wiki concept may be the better way to go. If we want it to be songwriting related without being a repeat of the last one, here's something I've been wanting to do/see for a long time for both music and comedy.

Some of my favorite songs are not really my favorite songs but rather are tunes that some musician or group has re-arranged into a new musical style. This is often best when the "target" style is far removed from the original. Gangsta Rap to Acoustic Folk, Gangsta Rap to Country, etc.

Some examples from youtube, if it will let me:

Dynamite Hack made a terrible early 90's rap "Boyz in the Hood" into a great song:

The Gourds (I always thought this was OAR) made a great country revision of Snoop's "Gin N Juice":

We even have a few lessons like this, in the "Canon Rock" collection. I think Marcus' band Blind Guardian has a cool metal version of Surfin' USA, yeah?

So why not make a contest to arrange some old well known (within their genre) songs into a new and inappropriate style? Metal to Country, Country to Emo/Rock, Pop to Neoclassical? Folk to Death? Seems like a few learning opportunities as well as some good comedy.

Really, who wouldn't want to hear Lian or Kris belting out Britney's "Oops, I did it again" in metal vocals?

Definitely can't provide tabs and such on GMC, that's true. Could be that GMC just sets the rules and picks a few songs that are extreme examples of their native musical styles and leaves the rest up to the competitors. Ought to be great experience to transcribe the songs ourselves (even if there's some help from tabs we might go find elsewhere), right?

And dude, yeah. I would pay to hear that as well smile.gif

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I think Children of Bodom might have done that already.

By the way if someone handed me a metal arrangement of that song, I'd gladly sing it! biggrin.gif Really!

As for the competition we could upload the videos/songs to youtube (if there is no video we could just have a static image) - if we do that and don't have any tabs here it won't be a problem.

Posted by: Oxac Aug 13 2009, 04:01 PM

I have a couple suggestions.

Transcriptions, a GMC instructor upload a solo that is to be transcribed, best transcription win. This time the contribution must be sent via mail or similar though, since it would be easy to copy from other contestants.

Michael Jackson, Best interpretation of a Michael Jackson song or similar. Due to the recent loss.

Best drawing of a guitar.

Best Idea for improvement of GMC.

The comp centered around the REC program seems cool.

Maybe the prize for that competition would be like custom GMC forum profile graphics, custom name-thingies laugh.gif for those titles you get when you pass the REC and maybe a chance to meet a GMC instructor of your choice (probably not going to happen, but worth metioning)

I think Oxac has cool ideas! It's important to trigger a big part of the community, also the ones who aren't as highly trained guitarists as Muris! The last competition, was purely based on guitar skills, so I guess it'd be good to do something non-guitar this time, or at least not in a way that only advanced players can win! I think the transcription is really cool, but possibly people will get the same result and, which is the "best" transcription? I also like the redoing a song with your own interpretation, choose something slow for the non-advanced, and it'd be awesome! Great thinking Oxac!!!

For like the GMC improvement ideas why not award site based awards.

Like, maybe custom badges, forum profile graphics, titles, custom video player maybe...laugh.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Aug 13 2009, 07:16 PM

Well my idea with the "GMC improvement competition" would be to reward actual improvement - not the ideas. The way I look at it is that anyone can come up with a good idea - but few can actually implement the idea, or come up with a working strategy on how to implement it.

So I thought about doing a competition about both coming up with an idea - and implementing it.

" - So how could we implement an idea, we can't change the site's content?" Well you can, here are some examples:

* GMC lacks good beginner material - you could gather the best beginner material (video, wiki, forum, practice agenda etc) in a wiki article

* Many new members at GMC don't get very active on the forum (discussed in another thread today) - you could contact lots of people via the forum, start chatting with them and get them active. By the end of the competition you could give us a list of your achievements and you might win.

* You come up with an idea on how GMC could be promoted elsewhere on the web. Either carry your idea through, or write a detailed description of how it would work. (Ie the "GMC Idol" idea is great and something we all want, but just that wouldn't be enough, however a detailed description of how it would work and how it would be carried through might have a chance to win the competition)

* Gmc has lots of loosely connected features (practice agenda, Virtual bands etc etc) - you come up with a brilliant idea on how to connect them. Even better you create a wiki page where you connect it all and we link to it from somewhere central on the site (if you win, that is!)

* GMC has even more "loosely connected" lessons - you come up with a new categorizing method which gives our archive a better structure.

* You have programming skills and can actually build a useful feature for GMC. Of course it would have to be something farily independant from the rest of GMC, since we can't really let anobody inside the site's code.

Most of these ideas aren't really a matter of building something big and new - but rather making something good with what we have. And it's that sort of thinking we need more of!

Posted by: Murloc Aug 13 2009, 08:13 PM

You sure came up with a creative idea for a competition laugh.gif

Posted by: kaznie_NL Aug 14 2009, 04:22 PM

Kris, the idea is cool, but (i'm always Devil's Attorney tongue.gif ) it might not be clear enough to make this into a competition. You want improvement with the already existing material, but there needs to be a better way of making that into a match! I mean, how can we compare someone who wrote a wiki article connecting the VBs with someone who redecorated the front page?

Nice idea Kris laugh.gif

Posted by: Koopid Aug 14 2009, 04:36 PM

I have an idea, but I don't know if it could be a competition or a collaboration, it would require a lot of prices...

Anyhow, this idea is something i wanted to do for a while with my band, the idea is to create a song in a different way .. smile.gif

This is the idea for 4 songs...

1. Someone create a drumtrack and add a basic chordprogression using powerchords only. I am talking the most basic chordprogression you can do, one downstroke each chordchange. The chordtrack is to be removed later THe drumtrack should be quite generic too.

2. Send the the drumtrack to 2 bassplayers who will add their basslines to the track following the very basic original track.

3. Bassplayers sends their tracks to two rythm guitarists each who will add rythm guitar tracks (these tracks can be multiple and quite advanced) and remove the original chordprogression track.

4. the 4 rythmguitarists sends their tracks (that should now have drums, bass and rythm) to a vocalist each who will add vocals, need to add room for solo(s).

5. Solo guitarists will add solos and the song is done.

During the whole collaboration noone is to discuss or show their ideas about their takes with other persons. It should be quite fun to see how much the songs would vary when different people add their thoughts to it without getting inspired by eachothers takes and ideas, and the bassist and rythmguitarists are certainly gonna have an idea about the endresult when they add their tracks that are most likelly not gonna be there smile.gif

It is probable too complex for a competition i guess though, but it would still be a fun journey i am sure..

EDIT: The winner would be decided by vote or jury or combination but it would be a team win...

Posted by: Koopid Aug 14 2009, 06:26 PM

Hmm, I just read my own post and its an impossible competition... it would be a fun collab tho i guess smile.gif

Battle of the one man bands and virtual bands.

Make a song, everyone publish it at the same time in a GMC-group at for example www.soundclick.com which have charts. Then see who get's highest on the charts within a month.

Also a good way of displaying our community out there.

GMC Music video/Commercial

Students can either choose Lessons or create their own song, to make a music video or commercial for GMC

this will encourage people to work on video production and REC and of course writing or practicing music smile.gif

winners can get their commercial on the front page of the site

good way to promote the site as well.

EDIT

koopid beat me to it! smile.gif
