HI all
little question here

do we have some recomendations when we pick and learn something new????

1.for example-it's is better learn lesson lick by lick???? to made the lick on some corect speed and then add next lick and next lick.


2.or is better to learn the whole lesson and memorize her and then try to play the whole piece together with low speed???

both ways have probaly some advantage and disantvage.....

or how u all prefer to do that???

Hi Rene

Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages of course.

I would use lick by lick approach if I am learning anything really. I find this way easier then memorizing a lot of material at once. Having said that, tempo plays a big part along with techniques.
Can you take Muris lesson advanced B minor thing and learn it all at once? Its possible but chances are you need to break it up in smaller sections. That might not be lick by lick , maybe you can combine 2,3 ,4 licks and work that way!
Idea is you can use the whole song approach if it feels very easy to do it and you are confident from very beginning, otherwise lick by lick approach is way better in my opinion.
You can also analyze music that way and figure out what kind of harmony,melody, rhythm is going on , so you learn more then you think in the first place.

actualy like u also set both ways have something..when i'm learn{memorize} whole song then when i'm try play around the song thats not to boring like play lick by lick{or peace by peace}..but the other side of this is playing peace by peace even if thats boring somethime giving me better control to play certain stuuf more perfect

my question was set becouse i'm somethime use both ways...but i'm never thing before if i'm do something wrong or not..thats just coming to my mind few minutes ago and thats way i'm asking about this

I see where you are coming from... Totally forgot about "getting bored playing licks" part
Yeah you are right, this way you might learn slower , but this happens only in the beginning trust me. Once you get going with lick by lick you will become very fast with this technique and will take you very little time to move onto next lick and next lick. On the other side, I know exactly how you feel ! So many times I heard something that just blew my mind and I wanted to play it straight away that same moment!!! I didn't care if it was to fast or impossible , I just had to do it.
I still do this now days , and this drive and approach is great in music (it keeps you alive in music and you always strive to practice) , but I learned to adapt this approach and think long run. For me if I want to learn to play it exactly like I heard it on the record, I will spend some time with it for sure, nail every single element of it. If I want to get the idea of the song and improvise than its a slightly different approach - I don't "burn" my energy on the song but I rather focus it on improvising!

sure thanks verry mutch for your coments..i'm also feel little better with way lick by lick even if thats boring somethime...specialy when i'm not able made the lick on right time for long time{specialy Trond octave run on rock solo}...but all of this is also becouse i'm still beginer yet

i'm have to say lick by lick made me feel stronger with training right speed and timing ..somethime thats borring but i'm will work on that

For me, and just my preference, I learn the lessons in sections that the instructor has provided at tempo. For some reason, when I practice at a slower pace, I don't get a feel for the flow of the lick, if that makes sense..

I basically just put on the main video and move the arrows to work on that specific part. When I have that part down, I slide the arrow to include the next part so on to the end. I move at a pace to where I know the notes and then work on cleaning it all up and working on the tone.

If you compare it to fitness and gym it would be like walking in with your pants and boots and running 50km/h on treadmill or doing first set for bench press at 150kilos and more
It is possible but you have to be in great shape . Same thing goes for guitar.

Well with that I can't really help you that much , I stopped going to gym couple of months ago. I play football with my friends (5 on 5) and I have a gf so I figured I don't need gym for some time .

maybe i'm aslo shoot use more GP5

i'm was try now to put together 2 problem licks for me from a-minor pentatonic lesson there..slow them down from 100bpm to 80bpm and after few loop i'm was techicaly improve on that lower speed and my freting those note's a litlle better like befor

I would suggest learning lessons segment by segment..After you get decently comfortable with the learned part go to the next one...Guitar pro file is very useful because it allows you to make loops from the selected parts of lesson and practice them in the tempo you want ..

I think the best way is to isolate the difficulties (like you've said, learn phrase by phrase). Then put together 2 phrases that make a sentence and keep it that way. Once you've got all the piece in a slow tempo then increase all little by little.
In that way the whole lesson would be accurate.

I always learn songs part by part. It is good to listen first many times and memorize the song structure. That helps later when learning the song.
