Improvisation got stuck?:S

Dec 8 2006, 07:39 AM	GMC:er Posts: 1.063 Joined: 2-October 06 From: Hawaii	Try a new scales, if that doesn't work put the guitar away for a while, I know it's a difficult thing to do, but you gotto take some time to get a perspective on your playing, and think about what you need to do to become the player you dream of being. Alot of the time what helps me when my improvisation gets stuck, I'm a runner so I run, but you can do any activity you want, as long as it gives you time to think; now what I do is I think of music, could be anything, something you thought up or somthing someone else wrote, as long as it's music(can consist of any instrument your mind can think of), and I imagine a beautiful guitar solo over the music, and it's important to keep all theory out of your mind, don't think about keys, chords, scales, or arpeggios, just make up the most beautiful solo you can think of, go home and play it. And also maybe take a day off and just sit and listen to some of your favorite guitarists. Some other stuff that helps me is looking at the licks of the day. When I experienced this in my early days of practicing - the reason was almost always that I had been practicing scales/exercises more than focusing on new licks. Supposedly it will force you to get creative - It might change the way you think about some of the littles riffs and cliche's you use if you have to re arrange them because you keep using the same notes over and over. just a thought.. Yes - implying different form of limitations is a great thing to do. Some examples, restrict yourself to... - playing only on one string - only use double stops - only use stringskipping (in your slow phrases) - bend on every note This kind of thinking often gives birth to new ideas!
