Hey guys and gals,

I read some stuff about carpal tunnel syndrome and, obviously, I'm scared tongue.gif Whenever I'm finished playing guitar, my left lower arm is nice and warm, but when I for instace put my right thumb down on the inside of my lower left arm and press and slide my thumb towards my wrist, I can feel an uncomfortable tingle in my left hand.

I've read that whenever someone has carpal tunnel syndrom, tapping the inside of the wrist can lead to tingles. I don't have that, but when I move away from the wrist a bit, like 4 inch towards my elbow, and repeat the tapping, I can feel the tingling. It hasn't realy gotten better or worse in the last half year or so wink.gif

Is this bad? Or does everyone have that?

Sean

As far as I know we do not have someone qualified to answer these kind of medical questions - and you should consult a doctor/chiropractor and never rely on answers you get on the Internet for these kind of things.

Having said this - I think your description sounds bad and it does not sound like this is something everyone has. So it could very well be symtomps of something which might get worse - so once again I would consult a doctor/chiropractor right away.

As always to prevent injuries (in other words what you should do before you start feeling pain) you should warm up, stretch your hands and always be vigilant to your bodies signals.

I agree with Kristofer, it could be a number of things, mostly a warning sign.

Excess stress or pressure applied to your arm,
or you have a pinched nerve.

Worst case:
Oncoming heart attack and stroke.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).
Dislocated or ruptured vertebrae in the neck/spine.

It is suggested that clenching and unclenching the fist several times or bending the elbow a few times, when the tingling sensation is experienced in the left arm, can get the sensation of the hand back to normal. As the exercise performed stimulates the blood flow of the arm, the circulation returns back to normal. Remember people, left arm tingling can be an indication of something serious or it may be nothing at all.

Hey mates!

I read in an anatomy related book that you can check for the carpal tunnel problem, by following the next set of steps:

1) Touch the tip of your index finger and the tip of your thumb - resulting "the OK sign"
2) Do this with both hands and stretch your arms in front of you
3) Have someone pull "the OK sign" created by both hands
4) If it hurts - it means there's something going on and you should check with a doc as Kris said.

it's not a certainty but it's a sign telling you that it's time to ask a professional's opinion

hope this helps

Cosmin

I've done Phalen's test on Carpal tunnel syndrome quite a few times, always came out clean tongue.gif As Cosmin told his method, here's the Phalen's test

1) let the knuckles of both your hand touch eachother, resulting in a horizontal line of your two connected arms
2) bend the wrist, so that the hand make a 90 degree angle with your arm and the knuckles are still touching.
3) open up your hand if it was closed

Hold for 30 seconds and get your hands back to normal. Any tingles? CTS might be your problem. I experience nothing ><

Hahaha great! I didn't know this one, so thank you smile.gif

It's very good that you structured the explanation into steps biggrin.gif it proves you understood yourself what you have to do smile.gif in order to explain it to others.

If have have a chance- try to see a doctor about it. Not everyone has this and it may be a symptom of something developing.
If it is, it's best to detect it as soon as possible.
In the mean time, try experimenting with your playing posture to find a more comfortable one.

If its a pain from guitar practicing, it usually goes off after a few days. I have had that situation but after few days of practicing that pain goes away. Its a sweet pain. If yours is living for half a year, I suspect theres something wrong in there. As everybody suggested, go to a doctor man. Don't wait for answers in the internet. Search for stomachache and you will find tonnes of answers ranging from food poison to ulcer, cancer. You can't really depend on the internet on medical issues. smile.gif

How much do you practice Sean? Possibly you had some intensive sessions without warming up?
