You knew it was only a matter of time before we started focusing on the technique that makes notes go wobble !! biggrin.gif

This one really strips vibrato down to its bare essentials and exposes it for what it really is. A series of bends.. oscillating back and forth. My main piece of advice is to remember to bring the string back to its original pitch before bending it back out again. This is how you keep your vibrato sounding in tune.

Here's a couple of videos I did, specifically about this, they may help show you what I mean as well smile.gif

I'm going to be away from next Friday afternoon until Monday so I'm going to make the deadline a day shorter so..

Deadline next Friday 11th May

Remember, there's a Donut of Celebration in it for the first one to post their take ! tongue.gif

I'm working on it. It's something quite difficult, especially the part where you play 32th notes (I think).
Here is a sample of my work at 55 bpm (the slowest backing track). Tell me what you think about it. smile.gif
Bonne soirée, Maître Ben.

This sounds great already ! smile.gif

For the fast bit you're talking about.. don't worry too much about it being exactly in time. I believe vibrato is a natural thing that doesn't have to synch in with the beat. I just made it this way to demonstrate the 'bending' approach as clearly as possible and to get people used to doing it at different speeds.

You're on the right path. Just watch out for some of those semitone vibrato notes (3rd note on each run) as some of them are sounding a bit sharp, more like whole tone smile.gif

It's been good to work on this. I enjoyed your youtube video. People get recognized with good vibrato.

Cheers Mr Ben.

Zoom-Meister !

Busting out the rhymes !! You're unstoppable cool.gif

This is really good, I'm definitely hearing improvements with your control. The one thing I'd advise is to try and reach for the whole tone if you can as you're doing semi tone bending mostly. It's harder to do, especially quickly, but it'll give you more scope for doing wide vibrato in the long run ! Nice work !

As you are the first axe master to post a full speed take, you may collect another Donut of Celebration ! Eat it wisely..

This is spot on, Grind ! smile.gif Can't fault it.. great work !

Did you guys see the benefits of treating vibrato like bends ? Do you understand what I mean when I talk about bring the notes back to their original pitch to keep it in tune ? smile.gif

Yes Ben, I see what you meen. At slow tempo, I canb take care of it. When it's faster, I have too much to think of : rhythm, pitch of the bend, pitch of the "releasing", next notes. Quite difficult, but I suppose you get used to it, like everything else. Great lesson.

Hey, I'm back with a poor attempt at vibrato.
My 2nd finger got a little tender from the string that is under the one that I'm bending. So I'm using the 3rd finger the last few days.
I noticed it first on the previous task where I was doing all those slides and attempted vibratos with my 2nd finger.
I even switched to some 3rd finger on that task.

With this task, I just couldn't do the vibrato with any significant speed (with either finger). My co-ordination between forearm, hand,
and fingers would just fall apart.

But I'm not going to let this bring me down. I'll be adding this to my daily routine. My 2nd finger is almost back to normal too.

Oh, I also slowed down this take to 75 bpm.

Have a good day.

Hey this is not a poor attempt by any stretch ! There was nothing wrong with any of the vibrato on the G string at all.. maybe some of the bends were just a bit flat but when you apply them to a normal vibrato situation that's not important.. the pitches are just there as a training tool to get you to used to wider vibrato so that's not really an issue. The technical side of things was all there smile.gif

The ones on the B string were a little more awkward so maybe you could devote some extra focus to doing vibrato on the higher strings to get your personal feel for what's right and what's not. You do have to approach it differently because you can't really do the downward vibrato on the B & E. You can do it in a subtle way on the B but not wide. So most people do the upward vibrato thing.. so it's basically like bending again. You hear that note at 0:56 ? I make those notes very subtle, I don't quite push it up to a semitone, it's just under. So if you want a subtle vibrato using upward motion, try to keep it between the natural pitch and a semitone - very slight. However, when you want full on, aggressive vibrato than treat it the same as the wide downward ones - just push it up like a really energetic bend smile.gif
