May 6 2013, 08:12 AM	GMC:er Posts: 25.297 Joined: 23-December 09 From: Atlanta, Georgia, USA	Misha from Periphery has a new Overdrive pedal and this vid shows him with his AXE FX unit and the custom pedal, and the original pedal the custom is based on. The reason I thought I'd share this, is that it shows a big "Trick of the Trade" for many crazy gain guys use to get their sick tone. In short, they put an overdrive (typically a tube screamer sort of pedal) in front of their setup whether it's a TUBE HEAD or a AXE FX Processor. Of course, you can get PLENTY OF GAIN WITHOUT THIS TRICK. Many people do just fine without it But many put an overdrive type pedal (not a distortion, big diff actually) with the gain on low and volume on high, to give their tone punch and bite. This trick also works if you are using a POD, USB INTERFACE, ETC. Essentially, it's acting as a little tubey sort of pre-amp boost which makes the distortions in a given setup sound a bit meaner. Especially when using something like AMPLITUDE, GUITAR RIG, OVERLOUD, having a bit of clean boost on the way in can really help a given "patch"/Preset sound WADS AND WADS AND WADS BETTER!!! Not to mention, it can make even a cheeeaaaaaappp combo amp sound waaaaaaaayyyy better especially during SOLO passages. So many new players really struggle with their tone. Relying sometimes too much on a given amp, plugin, when just adding a bit of boost at the front end could open up a whole new world of tone. It increases picking dynamics, increases chord definition and clarity, tightens up the low end, adds more mids, and adds beautiful sustain to the sound... all of this on top of just enhancing what was already there. I NEVER make a metal tone without it, whether with the AxeFX II or with my pedalboard. Even for punk and hard rock I use it, the difference is amazing! I highly recommend it! Killer. It's quite the pricey pedal though. It's a pre-order product right now and it's going for around $230. I've never seen such an expensive pedal (other than a multi-effects pedal). It's actually hard to believe that something as simple as a pedal can make a world of a difference. I know when I owned my Mesa Triple Rectifier, it was kind of dull, bland, and slightly muddy. But then I used a Boss Metal Zone and a Ibanez TS-9. The Boss was great for getting into death metal like Cannibal Corpse, where the TS-9 added almost an invisible lift in tone. Didn't seem to really color it but tightened up the attack for my picking. Toss that bad boy on the clean channel boosted to vintage and you could rock out a dirty blues tone in a heartbeat. I've had students report being initially unhappy with their hugely pricey new amp setup (Mesa, Marshal, etc.) and not being able to get the tone they were looking for when buying the amp. Then after trying the "tube screamer preamp" trick, BAM! Instant amp love. Of course, it's possible to get AMAZING tone without this. People do it all the time. Much "Tone" is in the fingers, and volume plays a large role when using a valve amp. But adding less than $100 of pedal, in front of any rig, can often have a HUGE impact on the overal quality of the tone and make nearly any rig respond better especially during solos. BIG SECRET: IT WILL WORK WITH ANY DECENT OVERDRIVE!!!!! You DO NOT, repeat DO NOT need to overspend on the custom overdrives. You can get great results using a Cheap JOYO pedal. Just make sure you get a decent OVERDRIVE pedal. Distortion pedals act slightly differently and still work but yield a result that isn't always perfect for every setup. A used Tube Screamer, a used JOYO overdrive, a new NUX overdrive, etc. Any decent sounding overdrive pedal with volume up, gain down, tone past the mid point will do ya Todd QUOTE (TreyDeschamp @ May 8 2013, 05:55 PM) That is awesome. There are only $150 of them so maybe it's driving up the price due to simple supply and demand. I still have not gotten mine yet so by the time I do I"m Guessing they will be much cheaper on ebay It looks like folks are waiting about 2 months from order to delivery so I"ve got a few weeks to go....... It took so long to get my Misha pedal, that they came out with a "DELUXE" version and DENNIS (The guy who runs pro tone) offered to upgrade me for free!!!! Here's mine in action!! and the first tracking I did with it. I re recorded some old parts and added new parts for SIX DEMON BAG!! NO AMPS Signal Chain: Strictly 7 Cobra with Lundgren M8 Pickups>Bulb Deluxe Pedal>Interface>Overloud TH1 I have to say I think this is a great example of getting a really heavy sound WITHOUT A REAL AMP* http://soundcloud.com/techniqueswithtodd/solo-backing-track-six-demon Here is a pic of the pedal. It's got two switches instead of one on the original MISHA and the jacks are on the side, not the top. There are as "rare as British Dentists" If you find one, GET IT!!!!
