I tried, thinking my fingerstyle skills would help, but that high G drone string that you play with the thumb throws things for a curve. The right hand picking is the priority when playing bluegrass banjo, it trumps even playing the melody line. We lived upstairs and our balconies were separated by a wall but we used to sit outside at night on the weekends and I would strum the acoustic while he did his banjo thing.
