Hello to everybody from France. I'm a lefty after a bad accident - I have a weakish left hand- and I was wondering how to hold the pick correctly. I've checked out the Wallimann vids- what a player !! - and I noticed he always seems to make a fist type grip with his thumb bent - is this correct ? In other words, should I change my grip, which is now with a flat thumb or not ? Any suggestions ? Phil

If you like Davids accentuation, muting and regular picking, yeah, go for it! Try to watch as many vids with Dave as possible. Ask for closeup pics of his picking hand. You would need one pic when he's as far away from the string he's picking on as possible when going down and when going up, this is hard to explain but if you tremolo a string, then you go above and below the string with the pick, get pics of all the situations. Ask him to describe his picking motion. Ask him to describe how he angels the pick and how much. You'll also need to know how much of the pick that sticks out from the hand and with how much he actually hits the strings. You need to know how he changes strings, how he mutes etc.
That and TONS of practise. But of course, practising to be able to play like David is a good way to get a nice technique.
If I hadn't seen David playing like a god with a fist, I would have said you can never make it to a good player holding the pick that way !! For me it looks pretty unnatural and uncomfortable but as you can never make it as far as David did with an uncomfortable feeling when picking I am sure he finds he VERY comfortable
