DIETERLE - TIMING ASSIGNMENT I

Goal: Quarter notes

On this first assignment, the idea is that you play quarter notes over AG/MC collab's backing track. You can use A pentatonic random notes for it. It doesn't care the phrasing, or melodies created, this first task is just to adjust your quarter notes timing.

Please record yourself and post an audio here to let me check it and go on with the next assignment.

Here I recorded a short example: Attached File  Timing_Assignment_1.mp3 ( 171.44K ) Number of downloads: 222

Hey guys! Great to find your takes here soon and with this takes also some good news. The problem that is making your Collab's takes sound with timing issues is clearer to see when you play quarter notes, and I can say that both have a similar problem. Dieterle didn't play quarter, he played 8th notes but the issue that I note is similar.

The best way to note what's happening is opening Rhida's and my take and play them one after the other to be able to compare the differences. If you listen to my take, you will hear that I'm going EVEN with the beat, in other words I go with the beat totally tight. When drums and bass goes simple, without arrangements, you will hear that the beat is very clearly marked by the kick drum played unison with bass. If you then hear Rhida's take you will notice that he is not playing EVEN, he is giving some kind of "SWING" to the notes. This small displacement becomes a timing issue when you play phrases that combine quarter, eight and even sixth notes. That's what we mean when we say, you are not "going with the beat".

Once again, this is easier to note by comparing both audios, so please use your daw (maybe reaper?) to open each version and be able to compare them smoothly.

So I will give you a new task, that is the same than the previous one, but this time you have to focus on:

Rhida: Playing EVEN with the beat.

Dieterle: Play QUARTER notes EVEN with the beat.

Deal?

I feel this is going in the right direction, even though we asked you to redo this task.

Gab and I think we have spotted a clear problem here which hopefully is the root for many other problems. This means that if we can solve this together, you are in for a threshold experience.

This lesson is also very helpful for identifying quarter notes: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beat-Basics/
(more specifically part 2).

Please let us know if you need more clarification?

Hi guys! Thanks for the new audios! You did a good job on them. I notice that you are now going with the beat most of the time so it seems that you understood the difference and started to applied it. These new takes are not tight all the time, both have moments in which timing is not going tight, mostly in the second half when it seems that you distract a bit or something else makes you go less tight.

Please listen to your samples and let me know that you note it. If you note it, your work for the next days is simple: Practice. This is a very simple but effective exercise, practice quarter notes over the backing, every day and your playing will become tighter each day and this will be reflected in your overall playing.

The next task of this workout is doing a similar recording but this time combining quarter notes with eighth notes.

This is an example: Attached File  Timing_Assignment_2.mp3 ( 171.44K ) Number of downloads: 134

Excellent guys - this is going in the right direction.

If you follow Gabs advice, and perfect your timing with quarter notes - and when done proceed to the new exercises (mixing quarters and eights notes) - then there is a major chance we won't be nagging about timing in the next collab,

Go! Go! Go! Go! cool.gif

Hi Dieter! Thanks for this new take. I can notice that your timing is improving from take to take, so this workout is really helping!

The quarter notes on this new audio are sounding really good! At the same time, eight notes are not bad but most of the time you tend to play the second note of the beat a bit early and that makes the first note shorter and the second longer.

I'd like to hear a new sample from you trying to fix this issue, ok?

Hey guys!

Two samples for this second assignment.
The first one is more "mechanic".
The second one was played with more "enthusiam".

Franlky, I will never thank you enough for this thread as I never worked like that on my timing.
And it's so cool to be in this thread with my pal Dieterle!
Lot of support here as usual!

Hi Rhida, this is getting better! But there is still work to do. I can notice that your lines start to lose precision when you start to make it sound more musical. This means that you still need to work a bit more focusing on going tight with the beat when playing both quarter and eight notes.
I would like to suggest you to get back one step and practice the combination of quarter and eight notes using a very simple pattern, maybe just 4 note repeated.

Quarter notes are tight except when you play over the bridge between verse and chorus. However eight notes are giving issues, as happened with Dieterle. I note different things happening, sometimes you play the first note early, and that makes the 2 note pattern sound moved, while sometimes you play the second note earlier, making the pattern sound like "hurried".

Please practice it a bit more and share here a new recording. wink.gif

Wow this one is not as easy as it sounds.

And my practice was somewhat "painful" as I slowly begin to feel when I am ahead of the beat or when my notes are not even.
But it's a good thing it only means that I improve!
A lot of conentration needed for sure.

Not satisfied with this recordind but I wanted to share with you where I am today with this task.

Thanks for all your help!
