I don't know about just buying a new neck. I know when the time comes and my baby needs new frets I will have it refretted by the best Luthier I can find.
As for knowing WHEN they need it... that is a darn good question... anyone know? You may not need a full re-fret - that tends to be for extreme wear.
I just had a guitar (my custom) in for a fret dress and recrown, plus some other bits (new capacitor on the tone circuit and so on) and the total cost here was 90Euros. That was the charge from a local extremely talented luthier. My custom was made in the late 80s so the frets have had some abuse. I guess David O'Toole would have the answer. I think he has worn his giutar pretty well :-)
Maybe ask him in his GMC-board? You may not need a full re-fret - that tends to be for extreme wI just had a guitar (my custom) in for a fret dress and recrown, ... or tonymiro -------------------- My bands homepage

Yep Thats what i said on my post that there was an option of buying a fret dress and recrown kit on ebay for ONLY $29.99 USA dollars .But im afriad that i would mess it up.do you think its something that would be difficult to do yourself? Don't do it by yourself Dan!!! Find some luthier or go to nearest Music Store and ask. To change frets you MUST have right equipment. -------------------- Youtube

Don't do it by yourself Dan!!! Find some luthier or go to nearest Music Store and ask. To change frets you MUST have right equipment. +1 recrowning frets particularly is not something to be undertaken lightly. Get it wrong and you probably would be looking at a complete refret. Best to get a good luthier (not sure I'd trust most techs in guitar shops tbh - but maybe I'm overly cautious ).
