GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Eurovision Song Contest

Posted by: Stijntjen May 13 2007, 12:25 AM

Anyone watch the eurovision song contest ?
As again it was another great lesson in geographie.
Points are given to neighbours and country of origin and not to the best song.
For example, greece gives points to cyprus and belgium(we have a lot of turks and albanian immigrants) give points to albania and turkey.
I just needed to get this of my mind tongue.gif It really sucks if you watch and you can guess perectly who will gets points from one another.

Anyone else notices this ? Is annoyed by this ? Or is it just 'cause i live in a country that never makes it through the semi-finals anymore ? tongue.gif

It has been like this for ages now! Me and my mom were watching it now and i was just reading like: "OK, now Ukraine is getting 12 points!" - and it happened. People votes mean nothing there! It's a political contest so i don't care about it.

Anyway - there were some nice chicks singing there! hehehe

Posted by: Robin May 13 2007, 12:40 AM

I didnt really watch it, I saw some seconds of a few songs. I usually hate all the kinds of music styles on these contests, but the worst part that I noticed was the vocals. I only saw, maybe 3 songs, but man all those vocals SUCKED big time.

Posted by: Stijntjen May 13 2007, 09:34 AM

Yeah the music always sucks tongue.gif
so i don't watch that and just watch the point giving tongue.gif
Anyone see the girl that was giving the points from ysland ?
Now that was a pretty girl tongue.gif

Good thing i didn't waste my time completely ...

Posted by: Balys May 13 2007, 10:11 AM

Lithuania ALWAYS gets 12 points from Ireland. I dont remember when we didnt get 12 points from Ireland. We get those points mainly because there are like ~300.000 Lithuanian people living in Ireland.

You don't know? Great - you are blessed smile.gif

Ok, its a competition between all of the countries in Europe to see who can perform the best song. It usually goes like this:

1. Each contry manages to pick a band and song totally unrepresentative of their music scene
2. There is a lame competition in which all the acts perform their songs
3. Afterwards, each country votes along strictly politial lines, totally ignoring the merits of the songs
4. Ireland is declared the winner

The ESC is pathetic now. As you all said points are given to neighbours and the music really sucks. There is some gems, but they are rare. They have to change the voting system or the ESC will die. Germany, France, Ireland and England seems to have abandon this and Italy doesn't participate anymore.

Posted by: Balys May 14 2007, 11:17 AM

I dont think its possible to change the voting system. The only solution to stop countrys to vote for each other is to ban voting of your neighbours. But that aint possible. Eurovision is going to die. But its quite a bad thing actualy. There are many people who LIKE ESC. We cant blame them because its music to their ears. Just like our music is to ours. And another thing that would be bad if ESC died is that there would be no more National Selections. The National Selections for ESC is a rare oppurtunity for small rock bands that perform in the underground scene to show their faces on the TV. Many bands in Lithuania got famous this way.

I never miss the Eurovision song contest but I must say the voting part is a huge disappointment. I tend to belive it was more fair before when there wery jury groups instead of phone votes.
I dont belive they will ever cut the phone voting, it's too much of an income but it's not at all beneficial for the music.

Well, the Israeli song is crap, but it made it to the finals, because other songs were even crappier lol..
The countries get realy predictble, all the slavik countries(Russia, Moldova, Belarus, ETC.) send a hot female singer, Finland sends some unknown metal/rock act, and other countries ussually try and do something catchy like a numa numa song, but ussually they fail tongue.gif

Russia, Greece and Bosnia are my favorites from the first night smile.gif

Ireland aresending a turkey puppet to the best of my knowledge.....

Posted by: Mark. May 22 2008, 07:15 PM

I don't like it tongue.gif It is more about the act then the actual music, and if there's one thing that I hate then it's judging people or even bands on their appearance...

Recycling is good, saves the planet smile.gif

I don't think it's rubbish. I's fun entertainment for a family evening. Argue about why they suck the most and who is hottest.
Not my kind of music but as entertainment it's OK. It's like a tradition to watch it the whole family together.

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic May 23 2008, 12:56 PM

Yeah that's good point! Its a cool tradition and "show" to watch with family...Yes songs can be this and that , but there are always some number of really good songs out there..

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion May 23 2008, 12:57 PM

You gotta watch it in UK just for Terry Wogan's comments on all of them. "Next up, 3 French slappers". You can't beat UK commentators biggrin.gif

Posted by: Hauke_Z May 23 2008, 02:12 PM

I was really surprised when the "Finnish Monsters" from Lordi won the competition two years ago biggrin.gif

laugh.gif I always love Tel's comments on the presenters - he's great; shows the Euro up as the bit of kitsch it really is smile.gif .

Cheers,

Gotta watch this tomorrow ^^
I don't really like that they air the semi-finals now... It's a bit too much.
Also, it sucks that the former norwegian commentator quit.. It was a tradition to listen to his deep calm voice during Eurovision. Now it's some guy I can't remember having ever seen...

What do you guys think of Norway's song, "Hold On, Be Strong"? tongue.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 23 2008, 03:16 PM

This contest should not be considered worthy in any musical sense for all I care. It's a big show for the masses. Music festival where music is just a background thing. wink.gif

I agree, but for some reason it's a tradition for me, so I gotta watch tongue.gif

Tonights the finals ! smile.gif By best bet goes to Russia or Greece smile.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 24 2008, 11:33 AM

I would vote for Russia too. Didn't heard the song, but it seems to me they are most likely to win smile.gif

Posted by: Nighthawk May 24 2008, 11:33 AM

It's a shame who is going to represent Germany dry.gif

Posted by: Nemanja Filipovic May 24 2008, 12:05 PM

Just wanna say a few things,I think that in Eurovision song contest are some good songs, and you are right a bout the "friend countries" who give the points to there own,but if that was the case there would not be different winner almost every time. What happends is,the songs who win in the end is the song who won the most "little points",points of 3 or 4 votes.
My favorite are Bosnia&Hercegovina,Serbia(naturally smile.gif ),Sweden(my girlfriend works on Evrovision this year, and she say that the Sweden girl is cool, that she is "down to earth").
Funny thing a but Russia, they brought Stradivari violin, and with the violin comes 4 arm guards( with 4 AK 47).smile.gif

Posted by: blindwillie May 24 2008, 10:05 PM

GO FRANCE!
Cool song. A smell of Pulp and early David Bowie really.

Posted by: chmilew May 24 2008, 10:09 PM

haha, yeah Go France biggrin.gif .. and the pole (she's cute wub.gif ) tongue.gif

Yup.

Apparently we won't be entering next year as all the Eastern countries vote for each other regardless of the songs dry.gif

Finland didn't get that many points (again), and I believe we even lost to Sweden mad.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic May 25 2008, 07:30 PM

I don't know why England doesn't send some major stars to Eurovision, and you have a lot of them..I'm sure they would stand a real chance of wining then. smile.gif

it's just stupid now, so predictable, its quite funny, i love terry wogan's sarcastic commentary.

Don't know what to say about Sweden's contribution... I guess it's best not to say anything at all smile.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic May 25 2008, 09:00 PM

I just don't think its a big corruption there , I mean some countries send "stars" and they do much better when it comes to placing in the contest.. smile.gif

Posted by: Niko Fran May 31 2008, 03:21 PM

I dont think that the ESC is compleatley corupted. People claim that the east countries vote for their neighbours, and yes, the do, but so does the western, like Sweden - Norway - Denmark - Iceland - Finland voted alot for each other this year. But if they just keep voting the same each year, that would not explain why Finland wins with 296 points two years ago, and was far down the charts this year, so i stil think that the best song wins - as some people allways vote for the right song. Russia did get alot 4-5 etc. from alot of countries outside eastern europe, so i say i think it was fair. I'm danish, and i voted for France, to bad it dindt make it very high, really liked it sad.gif

Posted by: Canis May 31 2008, 03:25 PM

I think it's "optional corruption" tongue.gif I read somewhere that Sweden complained because they didn't get 12 points from Norway, and said that "Norway stood us up when we needed them the most" tongue.gif

Posted by: Marek Rojewski May 31 2008, 03:36 PM

Well I am quite happy that Poland placed last;) Apparently only Poles voted for themselves, I mean the ones that live in Ireland and Great Britain, due to work immigration.. Shame on them, we could have 0 points!

Posted by: Tsarpf Jun 9 2008, 02:30 PM

LORDI !!!

oh yeah.. it was 2 years ago :/

Sweden didn't give any points to Finland this year I think :/
