Hey again guys,

i'm thinking about purchasing a bass partly to be able to record my own base when making songs and partly to help out some friends when they rehearse. I don't really know what brands make decent cheap "beginner" bases, any suggestions?

I would probably set the limit at around 5-600 Euro.

Also, I can't really see a benefit playing with 4 strings instead of 5. Are there any? 5 makes more sense to me, but I can't really say why =)
I will play heavy rock and metal mainly.

I don't know what prices you have in your local stores, but I definitely recommend trying out Peavey Grind 5 BXP bass if you can find it. Here's the pic:

and the specs:

* 35 inch scale
* 5-string
* 24 frets
* Passive humbucking pickups
* Mahogany neck with maple stringers
* Neck-through-body design
* Case not included
* Weight Packed: 18.00 lb(8.164 kg)
* Width Packed: 6.5"(16.51 cm)
* Depth Packed: 52"(132.08 cm)
* Height Packed: 19.25"(48.895 cm)

I tested this bass guitar and it has not only very good playability, it has great low end, not usually found in it's price range.

For awesomes chepness and great bass, check Vester basses. This brands are jappan/korea fender copies instruments that doesn't exist anymore as Fender sue them, but still is possible to find in ebay.

Something like this should be decent :
http://www.thomann.de/se/fender_squier_del...z_v_bass_bk.htm

Also Peavey Millenium AC 5 string (with active electronics!) should be a very good choice! I heard that bass in action and tested it and its a "best buy" for a 5 string, but I don't see it on your web site (I can only find passive electronics version there).

it is beautiful and it plays like a dream, super thin neck, LOW action, active BARTOLINI pickups, it's very good!
